Until about 20 million years ago, India was a separate continent (or large island, depending on your preferred definition) floating in the Indian Ocean (though there were no people around to call it that, yet).
This terminology comes from plate tectonics. India is on a separate continental plate from the bulk of Asia. The ongoing collision between these plates caused the Himalayas to arise as well as several recent earthquakes.

In truth both these religions did come out of Hinduism but they do not consider themselves Hindus. There is lot of cultural mixed Hinduism and what we see in these two religions is cultural mix.
