has anyone , any company or any country thought about the reprocotions of the day when we do ( if we do) find a cure? is our planet ready to support an exponential addition of people? so then the true question is: are we ready to find a cure?

The same thing could have been said about the disaseases which were cured only in 20th century, the population could be supported. We are ready to find the cure. There are still many other diseases which balance population, there are suicides, there are murders, there are heart attacks, cancer is only one of the few. It won't change demography lot. We need a cure.

In spite of all the natural factors that are supposed to keep the animal population in check, humans (with our complex brains) have survived very well, and are destroying the earth so that many animals are extinct or endangered.

Drought, famine, floods, war, diseases are natural controls on population growth. It is truly only painful on a personal level. If you look at annual human death rates from a global viewpoint and then understand that there's almost 7 billion people on earth, then it's okay for people to die in tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, from AIDS, from cancer.

The planet can bearly support 7 billion people with farm-animal factories, farm-fisheries, waste management, water treatment, soil erosion from deforestation, etc.

Cure for cancer would be a great relief to the "Western" world, as vaccines relieved alot of the angst in the early 1900s, but a new more deadly disease will surely evolve to control the human population, who overuse and abuse antibiotics (creating new "monster" viruses).

Yes, we can just start building up all over the place instead of just the large cities. Since there will not be a need for cancer research, we can put more effort into learning how to feed and house the larger and growing population. Also, something new will probably pop up to take its place.

Curing communicable diseases would cause more problems than curing cancer. But your point is well-taken. Unless we control the birth rate, we can't forever increase survival rate. We could survive for quite some time, but not at the quality we are used to unless we make major changes in our lifestyles. Sad to say, we could figure out a way to do it, but at tremendous cost to the natural world.

Ha, of course. There are many and many other causes of deaths. I don't think cancer is the #1 cause of death either. The problem with cancer is.. ANYONE can get it anytime. That's why it's pretty scary. As a science nerd, it'd be my dream to find a cure for cancer.. -.-

Eliminating cancer would mean eliminating a lot of the things that allowed our population to get this large in the first place, and a lot of other little ridiculous things. We need to care for our planet, and care for ourselves. I think restraint is where the solution to many of our problems will be found. If we can restrain ourselves from creating ridiculous crap like twinkies and chemical fertilizers and restrain ourselves from dumping crap in our rivers and restrain ourselves from unhealthy lifestyles AND restrain ourselves from having too many children, there'll be enough happiness and health to go around.
