I say sure, why not? But would it be practical????!!! Think of the size of such a parachute! If you are talking about small airplanes this idea is all ready used buy a couple of dozen plane manufacturers. If you talk about planes the size of a Boeing, that is just silly. The chute must be how big?, like a 4-5 story building???

As previous responders have written, all new Cirrus aircraft come with an emergency parachute. There are a few other general aviation models that can be retrofitted with an STC (Supplemental Type Certificate) to have one added. Bombardier is also currently study the possibility of designing a parachute option for Challenger business jet as well as it's line of regional jets in production now.

As for uses, it is designed as a last resort effort for the pilot. If all else fails and there's nothing else possible to do in order to solve or avoid a problem, the parachute is available.

AN actual airplane is sold and used today which has an emergency parachute. The aircraft company that makes these aircraft is called Cirrus. You can get more info on it at www.cirrusdesign.com The university that i am a flight instructor at uses these aircraft. No other aircraft has this, not piper and not cessna.

It'll have to be really, really big and made out of a very strong fabric. Also storage space and weight is an very big issue. Some cessnas are equipped with one. But I think its very costly and can only be used once. So it is possible on small personal recreation aircrafts, but for the much larger commercial airplanes, they have find some way to reduce the speed of the craft and something that can withstand the forces and weight.

HaHa... Cirrus didn't have to add a parachute because of its lack of spin recovery... Its a safety feature. A cirrus is one seriously stable aircraft. Its stall characteristics are superb. To answer the question, all Cirrus's are built with an emergency parachute.

well for one thing that would have to be a really big parachute... and its a possibility that it might slow down the plane but if your talking about the big jet liners... well they are pretty much introuble during a emergency unless its a minor 1

Cirrus had to add the chute in order to be certificated due to its lack of ability to recover from a spin.

They already have been, as long as your aircraft isn't a 747. Check this website...
