It doesn't go anywhere. A hole happens when a strand of wool breaks, through wear or being caught on something. This shrivels back through the adjoining stitch which causes a hole. It gets bigger as you move, or as the jumper gets washed.

depends how the hole was caused.
sometimes when you was items, there is a tendency to put too much wasing dtergent in, so it doesnt rinse properly. as it dries this detergent solution becomes more and more concentrated (losing water solvent to evaporation) and eventually becomes concentrated enough to react with the wool... especially if its a whiole before the next wash. this works for detergents with bleach in them very well.
but there are lots of potentially corrosive chemicals around that are harmless in their present concentration, but can become a danger to your clothes later, with evaporation.
even sweat can do this... with prolonged exposure to heat, sweat the urea in sweat breaks down into carbon dioxide (just diffuses away harlessly) and amonia - this is very corrosive and can not only cause wool and other fabirics to to dissolve, but can cause your skin to burn.. this is how you get 'chapping' or 'chaffing'. it has very little to do with friction - wool in your navel turns blue - this is like a litmus test - very alkali.
i drifted off the point a bit there, but you get the jist - chemicals we thikn are harmless, lose solvent and build concentration to be able to dissolve our clothes - the wool is dissolved

The sheep have been hiding in your garden & as soon as your jumper is hung out to dry, they sneak up and take a bite, bit by bit.
Just look for the technicolour sheep in the fields!!!!

It gets pulled into the remaining loose stiches which come apart because they are no longer knitted into one another. This can be darned but it's a lost art nowadays in this throw away society.
