Yes was not a good answer.

There is a way that they could be connected but it is highly unlikely.

The "running hot" has to do with a thermostat measuring the engine temperature which has nothing to do with the transmission.

If you vehicle is running hot, then the likeliest first thing to check is the coolant level. When the engine is cool (that is, when it has not been running for a while) open the radiator cap and just see if there is fluid about up to the top. If there is not then that could be the problem, so just add antifreeze (make sure it is antifreeze that has been mixed with water in the right proportion. It will say so on the container, or check with a mechanic).

If that is not the problem, then it could very likely be a bad thermostat. And, if you have any idea about that yourself, it is not that hard to change, or else, you can of course again just take it to a mechanic.

If there is no oil in the engine that could possibly be the problem, but its not the likeliest scenario.

Make sure to check the oil anyway to be on the safe side.

A problem with the transmission would be reflected with slow shifting, not shifting, grinding coming from the gears, etc. etc. etc.

No matter what problems you might have with the transmission however, the speed at which the engine would move would still depend on what you are doing at the gas pedal.

If you have an odometer, then check that. An odometer is the dial that shows how many rpms your engine is moving at. Even if you don't have an odometer, then you can tell how fast the engine is moving, just by how loud it revs.

About the only way that a transmission problem and the engine overheating could be related, is if the transmission is not shifting into the next gear and therefore your engine is reving way to hard to get up to speed in the wrong gear. I would think that you would notice how hard you are having to press the gas pedal to increase speed in that case though.

Whatever the case, don;t let it go any longer without determining the cause and solution of the problem.

Heat is the number one destructive force in an engine.

I forgot one thing, that the other guys answer reminded me of. If the transmission fluid level is too high, that actually can make the engine run hot. You just need to release a little of that fluid though, that doesn't mean there is a problem with the transmission.

Bad Transmission

maybe.....you didn't say if trans is a manual shift or auto. Automatic trans uses the radiator to help cool lubricant -- if the transmission is slipping badly it could contribute to some degree of temp rise in the radiator, HOWEVER....if the transmission is failing that badly you have a LOT bigger problem on your hands. Try this...net time engine temp is on the rise turn on your heater (hottest range available) and interior fan on high. If the temp comes down the problem is most likely in the cooling system itself. Unless you are driving an old VW....then you have ghosts.

Try check out your thermostat...... The problem is somewhere there...
Transmission hardly makes the car run hot....

Check thermostat, quantity of freon, fan.

Different models of transmission can even cause the engine to burn in the long term. Careful.

yes it could but not from just someone saying it must be slipping when in the driving mode many other factors make a vehicle overheat you need to take to a good shop and have it properly diagnosed don't guess this stuff it could cost you many $$$$$ if you keep driving it and would suggest towing to a dealer of a qualified shop

Possibly, but I doubt it. If it's an automatic trans, the fluid does run thruogh the radiator. Did you replace the thermostat? They are only a few bucks anyway.

Yes, if it's slipping, of course it will.
