I just went to Barnes and Noble tonight to look this up (my mini schnauzer does the same). What I found was that you're not supposed to give them any treats or rewards (verbal, toys, ect.) when they are in that condition. Then, when there is not a thunderstorm, slowly get them used to the sound of it by playing a c.d. of a storm softly. Do this gradually increasing the volume until they are so used to it, it doesn't affect them anymore. They said there is an actual rise in the dog's cortisone levels when are they are in fear of a storm. Very interesting.

Chamomile tea works very well, and is safe for her. Dump it out of the teabag, and use 1 teaspoon for small breed, up to 1 tablespoon for a large breed. Mix it in a little canned food, such as Mighty Dog, or Cesar's, and give about 30 minutes before she needs to relax. It will keep her happy, but reduce stress. It can be given as needed.
If your grocer doesn't carry chamomile, you can use 'Sleepy time Tea' as it is the same, but with added herbs. Plain chamomile tastes better to a dog.
You can play Storm sound Cd's for your dog to help her get used to the strange, scary sounds. begin playing it low, and increase the volume over several days.
You may still need the tea treatment though, as there are vibrations and smells connected to the storm that are not simulated in the sound track.

One thing you can try is giving her benadryl. She can easily take 50 mg. Make sure it is regular strength, not extra. Basically, you just want to make her sleepy enough to be able to relax. If this doesn't seem to help, there are sedatives that you can get from your vet. Also, whatever you use, try to give it before the storm actually gets there. If you know a storm is coming, go ahead and medicate - that way she already has the drugs in her system when the storm begins. Good luck!

OK..this is going to sound crazy...but bear with me....
I've heard that giving them vanilla ice cream calms them down during storms. I never got to try it...my dog would hide til the storm was over. I'm curious though.

well if it's really bad you can take her to the vet and they will presicribe sedatives for her to give before a storm starts. If you live somewhere that storms alot (like florida) you will probably really need them.

First, stop feeling bad for her. She'll sense that and she will think that her behavior is ok. Next, distract her. Teach her how to sit, stay etc. you need to be the pack leader and make sure that you are calm and assertive.

About all you can do is hold her and let her know you are there for her
Or take her into a room that the sound don't get to so load,
