Alright, folks, lets get ready for an old fashioned debate...
Now, I'm a smoker. I've been smoking for three and one half years and I have regular doctors examinations, I am also physically active, and nutritionally fulfilled. I have experienced no ill effects from smoking at all. Second hand smoke has been a hot topic on Yahoo answers for some time, and I'm here to debunk it. First of all, the fact that second hand smoke is worse than mainstream smoke, because the smoker has the advantage of a filter. Okay then..well, a filter is merely a cotton or acrylic blend stuffed in a paper wrapper. The cotton does trap some of the tar, but the way a filter works is by DILLUTING THE SMOKE. If any of you have ever touched a cigarette, you might notice several tiny holes in the filter. You draw in smoke through the filter, as well as air. The air dillutes the smoke, and therefore makes it less "harmful". Second hand smoke is merely ultra dilluted smoke in the air, it should never cause any harm!

Also, do you really consider cigarettes that bad when you drive around in tank-like SUV's which bellow thick noxious exhaust into the atmosphere, which is clearly more harmful than a cigarette! It only takes 20 minutes for you to die from breathing in constant exhaust. I've spent an hour in a room full of smokers, one of which was myself, and I'm here alive to tell about it! IF you think BANNING smoking all together is a good idea, think about prohibition. Did it work? No, it brought crime rates soaring to new highs, people died from drinking home made alcohol, illegal bootlegging became rampant! The war on drugs is also a new failure, what do you think? Banning smoking outdoors is rediculous, banning smoking in cars, which are personally owned and paid for is also just as vile. We smokers have rights, just as any other non smoker does. Show some common sense, if it bothers you, leave, or take it like a human being. Take it or leave it, I say. And remember, smokers can smell fear...

Sure, you can lead a lifestyle of constant vitamins and diets that taste bad. And you'll die old and your life will be unfulfilled. I'll bet having grand children gets pretty boring after a while, anyway. In reality, we all are dying at this very moment. Cigarettes or not, we're going to cease living someday, anyday. You complain about the guy who died at 50 from lung cancer, but not about the 20 year old who was hit by a bus. Smoking gives you pleasure, no matter how you put it. Nicotine is a natural uplifting chemical, and you really do feel good. If you want to live a happy life, drink responsibly and smoke till you're content. Eat red meat and have sex. Drive your H2 and live a little!

I respect anyone's choices, whether they wish to smoke or not, I will respect it and be civil. This issue has spun out of control! People die from lung cancer all the time, and it will have nothing to do with smoking. It's impossible to prove that smoking reduces your life expectancy by 7 minutes, medical technology is not that advanced. Unless the government has a time machine that they want to keep secret from us. By the way, I've seen it, it's called TimeWise by Mary Kay. An anti-aging moisture crea--anyway...smoking has been around for hundreds of years, and it's never going to go away. Unless you ban sex, alcohol (tried it, didn't work), automobiles, sun exposure, salt, nuclear technology, cell phones, microwaves, and LIFE itself. We all day, which means that LIFE kills us!! We cant do anything that will kill us, regardless of the pleasure it brings and regardless of personal choice! Live forever? Satanist!

If you choose not to breathe in our smoke, do not whine about it and try to get legislation passed. Step several paces away and breathe the air you deem *clean*, when it's actually worse to breathe than the air in your own home.

Asking why you should breathe the smoke is like asking why you should breathe at all. With car exhaust, fragrances, propellants, Co2, trace fecal matter, radiation, and other nasty stuff in the air we breathe 20,000 times per day (true fact), should you even worry about breathing in a tiny bit of smoke once a week?

I held my Uncle's hand several years ago and was by his bedside in the hospital when he took his last breath. I f he hadn't smoked all those years it would have been a lot more years until he took his last breath. He missed seeing his only son grow into a fine young man, see him get married and have a son of his own. My Aunt suffered greatly, because of his death and for all the time she had to take care of him while he was sick.
I sat in that hospital room watching them pump nasty, foul stinking crap from his lungs into a container so that he could breath. YOU cannot convince me that smoking has any redeeming purpose to a human being's life!
All that gunk, EVEN with a filter!
Besides, smoking is nasty, smelly and disgusting! You can smell it on people's clothes, in their hair and their homes ......I don't even want to go there!
Kissing a smoker is lick licking an ashtray! A saying I've heard that's really true!
Smoking also makes you look old sooner, especially women. I know two women I've known since school. They are both younger than me but they have smoked for years. They look at least 5 years older than me!
Please don't smoke yourself to death! moonflower

Many newer studies have shown the second-hand smoke theory is bogus. The latest ones show that smokers have a less chance of acquiring Alzheimer's, improves memory, and aids digestion. There still is the unfortunate long term effects of COPD and lung cancer. Some doctors agree that smoking 6 or less cigarettes a day makes one statistically a non smoker. Make your choices wisely and have a great day.

i am also a smoker but have to admit that i suggest that anyone who doesn't smoke to stay that way. three and a half years is not a long time to smoke, i had no ill effects at that time either, but now at 48, i can feel it coming on and i cant stop. there is nothing good you can say about smoking. i do believe that everyone has to respect the rights of everyone else and that includes both smokers and non smokers. but, if it comes down to a smoker smoking in a public place or a non smoker not wanting to breath my smoke, i have to go with the non smoker. their right to breath is greater than my right to smoke. while there is no more prohibition, it is still illegal to drink in public, drive drunk or be disorderly. exhaust fumes from cars are necessary, smoking isn't, smoking serves no purpose at all.

great debate facts.....
what I don't get is most of the ones against smoking ,around kids is a crime...killing the innocent yet they.tend to think abortion is ok ??
I know many people who grew up with both parents smoking all the time..none of them have asthma, lung problems or cancer....
My parents didn't smoke. and never had asthma. I have asthma....so where's the truth in their "facts" that it is PROVEN that second smoke is harmful to others?? Proof is in the pudding....cancer is herditary....asthma,anyone can develope..

I smoked when I was 30.. a doctor tried to use the "scare tatic" of a pulmonary test on me... after I did it..he came in & said,"well...you have the lungs of a 20 year old..NOW do you see why you need to quit"?
I laughed and said" No,not really...I'm pretty glad to know that I have the lungs of a 20 ,since I am 30".
If it's that bad...then the government should do something to the manufactures about removing the tar, nicotine and all the other stuff from them...makes more sense than the intorleance, vicious attacks, belittling, demeaning and persecution of those who are hooked on the nicotine..it's more addictive than herion !!

Its been proven 'second hand smoke kills' Its normally the partner in a relationship or marriage that doesn't smoke seems gets cancer, not the smoker himself. Its like the drunk driver, causing an accident and he lives, but the other people in the car he hit, dies!!....Think about the amount of chemicals you are blowing into the air, especially if you are in a enclosed room. Its also a known fact that pets, such as dogs and cats get cancer from inhaling second hand smoke from their owners. You might be active, and nutritionally fullfilled, but you are defeating your purpose when you light up!...........Hope you never get lung cancer
Heather Crowe from Canada was a prime example, she worked in a restaurant for 40 years, inhaling second hand smoke, and she died from lung cancer

You're obviously a smoker, but if you were a nonsmoker, you'd understand how much second hand smoke sucks. Someday when you quit smoking, and have to sit shotgun in a smoker's car as he lights up, you'll remember this post. It SUCKS. And great logic...it's not like second hand smoke is good for ya, of course its bad. Standing behind a running car that's in park outside for 5 minutes won't kill ya, but if ya stood there long enough, it sure would.

Second hand smoke is bad no matter what. Because when i was young my aunt smoke almost a pack a day and a small room. But the thing is when she open the door...all the smoke comes out and go straight to my lungs and made me sick. I could even breath because it made it hard for me.

Dude, I know it's hard to quit and all, I have parents that smoke, but really now...check out some hard evidence like: The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke: A Report of the Surgeon General (at the following url)http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/secondhandsmoke/report/ and countless other sources of information, then if you really want more proof, conduct an objective study!

I've been a second hand smoker for 22 years (I'm 23 now) and I'm fine but I still hate the smell of smoke and appreciate it when others let me have my clean air. I don't care if they've proven that it gives you cancer or not it still smells disgusting!
