you only multiple the dogs age by seven to find out its human age
for example my dogs is 2 years old, if it was a human it would be 14 years old

We do it because, on average, dogs live 1/7 as long as humans. And because we want to humanize them. :) My doggie is almost 2 or 12 1/2 human years.
