The difference is yes the hymen which is a small netting of skin in the vagina that tears the first time, and there is also the 'tightness' factor. This muscle in a virgin has never been stretched, where as a non has been stretch and unless they go a really long time with out it, will never be as tight

A virgin has a thin membrane called the hymen. In the first act of penetration its is broken. However you are a virgin until you have had a sexual intercourse with a male. Sometimes the hymen can be broken in a rough fall, or constant horseback riding. The vaginal walls are stretchy. Repeated intercourse causes them to permanently stretch, but this can be helped with kegle (I don't know how it's spelled, neither does spell check) exercises, where you consciously tighten and release vaginal muscles repeatedly. That's the difference.
Good Luck!
