Shariah law is compilation of the code of conduct for any human society. These are all derived from Quran (the holy book) and Hadith (the teachings and saying of the Prophet) and are basically used by the ruling elite or the clergy to induce fear in masses who are illiterate and poor but have very strong faith adherence. In Islamic law the emphasis however is on the provision of a welfare state first. Without that you can't enforce them as they envisage so many impossible things in modern day Islamic countries. For example Islamic faith needs to have a state by democratic processes (and there is hardly true democracy in any Islamic country), the state and citizens all should by those who practise Islam (not just the teachings and TV sermons but actualy doing what they say in their private and public lives), like Islamic concept of providing for the poor and making them have the same facilities as accorded to rich is mandatory (you can see its examples in Western welfare states where its the responsibility of the government that basic needs of all the citizens are met with without any discrimination), freedom to express is another often misjudged and misconceived idea which need to be present in the society. Muslim states these days simply can't afford to give this freedom to common man and wealth is restricted in the hands of few corrupts who deny to give it away (direct negation of the Quranic concept of Nifaq, i.e. giving away any extra wealth to the needy), and lot more.
Islamic spirit is not based on punishments, it incorporates the idea of 'adal' or justic based on leniency. Unless you have a society like this there is no point in enforcing this law. Gen Zia of Pakistan did this lousy attempt and so bitterly distorted the image of Islam in the whole world. Its his legacy that every terrorist act is now attributed to Islam.
Yes, once adopted as the code of conduct, it has so many aspects which work together for the benefit of people and open the avenues of freedom and knowledge. Current state of Islamic countries however will never permit that and it will remain a subject for seminars and academic discussions.

The disadvantages is that it does not respect human rights. However it is in accordance with the quaaran and some cultures are centred on the quaaran and then it is more appropriate for those countries but it does not work in countries that have a Constitution that bans half of Shariah law.
