The best Mexican restaurant in Chicago, for those who want authentic Mexican food, is Nueva Leon. Located at 1515 W. 18th Street in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, it lies in the center of the strongest Mexican neighborhood in the city.

The place is always filled, even for lunch, but waits tend to be short. It is BYOB, but there is a liquor store just two doors down to the West. Patrons are almost all from the neighborhood. You'll feel like you've discovered some special - a hidden treasure!

Have fun!

I don't remember the name of it, it's at 26th and Millard in Chicago, on the northside of the street, the storefront is like shiny white tile, there is someone making carrot juice in one side of the window and the El Pastor spit in the other window, the sink is on the wall outside between the two restrooms, but the food is the best Mexican food around here

The Brookfield Zoo (suburban Chicago) has a Mexican eatery. I can't say it's the best food, not having been to them all, but the mere fact that it's in one of the best Zoos in the world, is something that cannot be experienced anywhere else in Illinois.

Perez in the west loop art district, two blocks west of Halsted on Randolph. Tiny little neighborhood joint with fantastic grub. Must try the margaritas, too!

For something a little more "fine dining," I recommend the Adobo Grill on Wells just north of North Avenue. And for something even finer (read: more expensive), try Salpicon a little further south on Wells.

Check out Cafe El Tapatio at Ashland and Roscoe. Also, Lalo's has the best tortilla soup I've ever had - it's not on the menu but ask your waitress about it, it's what they order for themselves.

el jardin in Janesville Wisconsin. It's not too far from you. I've been to Mexico, and it's the most authentic I've found. It's on HWY 51 just as you come into town from Beloit.
