my mom works in a prison and a lot of the prisoners are Mexican and they call her "buela" or something...

My mom works in a prison and most of then prisoners are Mexican. I don't think they are calling her grandmother. She's not sure what they are saying; there's a word for flight that sounds like vuela.

They could be calling her "guera." While this term can mean blonde, it can also be used for any white girl/woman. When I worked at a clinic in San Antonio, all the Hispanic girls called all the white girls "guera."

Abuela is grandmother and abuelo is grandfather. Not all Latin culture pronounce the words the same. Puerto Ricans leave the S sound off a lot of words.

Vuela means to fly, but they might be saying buena which means that she is fine. If not...I have no idea what else it could mean.

If your mother is blonde they could be saying "guera" (pronounced=goo-eh-ra), which is mexican slang for blonde.
