superstition. and its nine lives.
the superstition may have started in Egypt. Apparently, the number nine is supposed to possess certain magical characteristics. In addition, in 17th century Egypt, cats were known to be linked to witchcraft and it has been noted that witches could transform themselves into the shape of a cat nine times. Similarly, cats can also be restored nine times, according to the myth, that is.
What I find amazing is that this superstition has been handed down from one generation to the next, but also from culture to culture, and no matter which level of society one belongs to, we have all heard of it at one time or another.

The saying is that cats have nine lives, not seven. But that is only a saying....it was made up a very long time ago and it just sorta stuck. It came about because cats always land on their feet when they fall off of something. Cats are cautious animals and don't charge ahead without looking, and can protect themselves pretty well.....like if they're lost they'll hide in bushes, etc. They seem to have a way of finding a safe place to hide in case of a catostrphe. And they always seem to come out ok. Because of that they were seen as "lucky" and having "more lives" than the normal animal.
I know, a LOT of "old" sayings don't make any sense, but sometines people just say them out of habit and don't realize they might have to explain them.

that is truly 9 lives contained in the legend, no longer 7. This somewhat is merely an previous legend, that is not any longer somewhat real! It got here about because of the very incontrovertible reality that cats are many times very resilient. They bounce back from issues that would have killed a classic animal! Like, they consistently land on their feet (lots of the time....) so that they're a lot less weak to falling and hurting themselves. =) Or so the legend says...

actually its an old wives tale.. cats have 9 lives.. they seem to get out of more scrapes then a dog can get into ..
.. sure if you hit an animal with a rock or a bat it will die but from what i know .. animals do come back as in reincarnation.
my dogs sister lady got hit by a car on 12-19-03 and her spirit was in our home till we got dixie in 2004..
cats are lovable creatures and are attached to their owners alive or dead..

Cats are curious and get themselves in trouble quite often. I had a cat that disappeared. Almost 6 months later, showed back up. Then he was caught in a brush fire. He was mauled by dogs. He could ahve survived that, but we weren't about to spend thousands of dollars in a vet bill for a cat.

People say cats have '9' lives because they always seem to be risking them and surviving close calls. They only have one, however, so make every kitty's one life a good one. And while you're doing that, learn English!

First of all, they have 9 lives, not 7, genius. Secondly, ever heard of reincarnation? They don't come back to life, but their soul goes to God, and then are born in a different body. All Buddhists believe in this. Though I am a Mormon. (My church doesn't believe in this, but I do)

its 9 lives..... and the second half is because of all the near-death defying stunts cats go thru everyday being cats. Hurling thru trees, dodging dogs/cars/kids, sleeping in the sun (driveway, road)
