I adopted a dog a few months ago whose previous owner went into a nursing home. He sleeps a lot, but he is older. Depending on the breed/age of your dog that may be normal. However I've had other behaviour problems (urinating in the house) with him that relate to his past. My vet and a canine therapist told me he probably has seperation anxiety. He needs attention when I'm home and I turn on the radio for him when I go out. You might want to ask your vet if they can recommend a canine behavioural counselor in your area. It wasn't all that expensive and she gave me some good insights in why he behaves the way he does and what I can do about it.

If this dog is a puppy, then I wouldn't worry about it. They need lots of sleep like babies. But, keep in mind that this dog is trying to get used to a new place and new people. Give him/her time to adjust. Just try to talk to the dog a lot and get down on the floor and play with him/her. Good luck.

how long did the dog live with the woman? maybe it is grieving for her. Do you love the dog? If yes give him or her comfort and a little petting until it gets used to being with you. If you don't love the dog find it a good home.

Take him to a pet store or a store just for dogs. Theres a place around me called "three dogs treat" or something like that... and My pup goes CRAZY in there. Even when we're a block away she'll start getting hyper and run faster. It really does cheer up a dog when they have their own little trip just for them. They really do need to be spoiled every once in a while... who doesn't?

I'd call the whisperer from animal planet. You should also take it out places so it can play with other dogs and meet new friends. And remember dogs have feelings too he just probaly realy missies his old owner. Give him a little time.

Sounds like he is grieveing. But before going to this conclusion you should have it checked out be a ve to exclude other medical problems.. When my uncle moved to the States he left in Italy his dog which missed him so much he just stopped eating and then just died.

Some dogs are very connected with their owners (and former owners) and get lonely w/o their owners. It will take a couple of weeks of SOLID ROUTINE before they can be comfortable with. Take them on walks at the same time, feed at same time, take them to the dog run at the same time, sleep at same time-- everyday. Consistancy is the bread and butter of dogs.
Give them time and love

Be patient. It is prob missing it's owner who passed away. Let the dog know that you are there. It will get used to you. It sounds like it is grieving. Pet it, show it atteneion and lots of love.
Good Luck!

The poor thing is missing it previous owner. is it possible to get some clothing or something of hers that maybe he could sleep with for a little until he gets used to being in his new environment?
Just give him plenty of attention, he will come around.
