Because a cat's claws, like an eagle's talons, are curved. They are extremely sharp, and don't just scratch. They are meant to dig in and hold their prey down. Ask any cat lover, in order to remove a cat from something - whether it's your favorite sweater or your arm, whatever, you can't just yank it off, or you'll have a nasty hole in your arm and a very hurt kitty. You have to pull out, away, and then up. As far as bacteria, most of that risk is from their bite, and not their claws. And why are you clipping your cat's claws? Give them a scratching post to help remove the dead skin and keep their claws sharp. A simple tree branch with bark on a post will do. You're not clipping fingernails and toenails here. Don't you people ever take your animals to a vet, and ask them questions? Don't you ever take the time to observe your animal's behavior and why they do the things they do?

... a scratch almost always stings ... but a cat's scratch can be especially bad. Cat's claws are not solid. Just like your fingernails are curved and get all kinds of dirty, the underside of cat's claws are hollowed out and full of all kinds of icky stuff. Just think of the cat scratching around in their litter box, walking through the yard, etc.

This is one reason why being scratched by a lion in the jungle can be fatal - just a scratch that doesn't rip open any major organ or vein. The scratch places all kinds of filth and bacteria in you.

Beyond the simple fact of it scratching, if your cat licks his paws a lot, it may be that the bacteria in his mouth is also on his claws. This bacteria can cause a stinging sensation, I think. Wash the scratch well, and put a bandage on it. You'll be all right.

Cats are a very dirty animal. Please don't get me wrong I like cats , but they are dirty. they dig in the ground and in a litter box with urine and feces, then they lick their paws so the mouth is dirty too. their claws are like razors and the scratch hurts and can get infected. You can get cat scratch fever from a cat it can make you very ill put you in the hospital in a few cases kill you. Cats can also pass on toxoplasmosis from their claws or a bite. Pregnant women are advised to not change litter boxes and not dig in the dirt without gloves

It could be because it's a surface scratch and most of our pain receptors are close to the skin, or it could be the saliva of the cat, as they groom themselves alot, including their claws, and the saliva can be toxic to small animals such as possums, so it makes sense that it might sting when they scratch us.

Doesn't any scratch or scrape have a certain amount of "sting" to it? Personally, I don't even know when I get scratched anymore. I'm used to it.
