The US Supreme Court stopped the recount of tens of thousands of ballots. As a result, many ballots in heavily Democratic districts never got counted, and Florida's electoral college ballots were assigned to Bush, which gave Bush the electoral win.
If you read the opinion, the problem was that while the Florida Supreme Court ordered the recount, they didn't specify the exact procedure by which ballots should be verified. As a result, different districts were using different standards for recounting. That was a 14th Amendment (Equal Protection and Due Process) violation.
What I think the US Supreme Court should have done is remand the case back to the Florida Supreme Court to have it specify procedures for recounting. But it didn't. Instead it just stopped the recount entirely, and effectively handed the election to Bush.
Not one of their better days.

Well, let me ask you this. Why has Florida still not resolved its issue with its voting method? I hear they are still using hole punching ballots and the ones with hanging chads are not even counted. How difficult is it to change this policy? It caused so much controversy in 2000, yet it has not been changed. I live in Michigan and I was upset when I first heard about it. Why would you take your precious time and do your research on candidates to go down and vote if your vote isn't even going to be counted? Do you think it's just a coincedence that George Bush's brother, Jeb Bush is the governor of Florida? Now, maybe he has something to do with it.
I will say however, that many people were and are for George Bush, so it's not like we all voted for Gore or Kerry and both times the election was stolen from us. I just want elections to be fair. But when are things ever fair and honest? Even if you have people in it who have the best of intentions, there will always be a few with selfish, dishonest motives, dipping their hands in.

By not getting enough supporters to the polls.
After the election, several independant recounts of Florida were made, one by the New York times themselves. The recounts confirmed that Bush won Florida.
But that's not as much fun to say as: "Bush's daddy bought Florida." or "Bush's brother is the governor of Florida, that's why he won." or, my personal favorite, "The majority of Americans voted for Gore, he got the popular vote." Which is not true, because the MAJORITY of Americans stayed home that day and didn't vote at all.
So basically, he was "cheated" out of the Presidency in 2000 by not having enough supporters go vote.
I'LL BET YOU'LL VOTE NEXT TIME WON'T YOU HIPPIES!!
Sorry,... 'bout that.. just kinda slipped.

It is a fact that he won a majority of the popular vote, and yet lost the electoral college. Therefore more Americans wanted Gore to be President.
I don't think there was some vast conspiracy to cheat him out of the election. But I do think it's unfair that more people voted for him, and yet he didn't win the election. That's the problem with the electoral college, though that particular situation has only been experienced twice in our history.

Short answer? Al Gore won the popular vote (more people voted for him) but because of the electoral college, more "points" were awarded to Bush. By winning the electoral college, Bush won the presidency but more people wanted Gore for the job. AND if it not for the Governor of Florida (Jeb Bush) Gore would have won the White House.

In 2009 I attended a lecture in Australia via Derek Shearer, former US ambassador & Clinton consultant. In an casual Q&A consultation afterwards, he mentioned that Clinton had an IQ of around a hundred and eighty, yet that Gore made Clinton look like a retard. He additionally mentioned that the reason Gore misplaced the 2000 election (leaving aside the election fraud and cheating on the component to the Republicans) replaced into via fact on a similar time as Bush is a moron with the IQ of a baked potato, he got here upon as a genial style of guy who individuals ought to think of going for a lager with, and bearing directly to. Gore, on the different hand, looked & talked like a political candidate, and used huge words that made him sound pompous & incomprehensible to many human beings. So there you have it; a rustic with this style of severe proportion of morons will commonly pick a moron to instruction manual it.

It has everything to do with the "winner takes all" methodology of the Electoral College. However you view the Supreme Court intervention in the Florida election (chad questions still hang around...sorry for that pun), anyway---the SC decision allowed the state of Florida's electoral college votes to all go to Bush. That swung the election, so he "won." This is actually a great argument to dismantle the electoral college since it came into being back in a time before quick transit, and instant communication. Perhaps it's time to go with a straight one person, one vote direct election?

There were laws in place to cover a situation like this, where the vote was very close, and provided that there be a recount, by law. The supreme court undermined this process. All indications were that if the recount was completed, Gore would have won.

New York Times investigation found out that out of the 2,490 overseas ballots 680 were flawed but were still allowed. All those votes went to George W. Bush.
Katherine Harris was ordered to send out a memo to her canvassing boards telling of the procedure for counting overseas ballots. State law required all ballots to be postmarked by election day. However calls were made to every republican over seas to send there vote in and there friends and familys also. The memo was then thrown in the garbage when they found out that republican voters were coming in over seas. instead she sent a memo stating that ballots "do not have to be post marked"
Florida passed a law just before the elections making anyone convicted of a felony was unable to vote. Most felons are minorities who tend to vote democrat. Who was the Governer of Florida letting all this happen? JEB BUSH the younger brother of George Bush. Harris and Bush's office told database-a firm with strong republican ties-to cast as wide a net as possible to get rid of these voters. So if you were a minority with the same last name or had a similar soc sec number of someone convicted of a felony you were not allowed to vote.
It is estimated that close to 50,000 voters could not vote because of this scam. Almost all were to vote democrat. It didn't matter that half the people had never commited a crime, and the one's who did had there voting rights reinstated years ago. People were actually recieving letters from republicans telling them that they were felons and not to bother showing up on election night to vote.
one of them was Linda Howell. Linda Howell wasn't a felon as a matter of fact she was the elections supervisor of Madison County, Florida.
George Bush was credited with receiving 537 more votes than Al Gore in Florida. If those overseas ballots were not counted as state law requires, or 50,000 minorities were allowed to vote like they should have been than Gore wins big time.
JEB BUSH rigged the election so his brother can win and even republicans wont deny it.
