I was a missionary in Brasil for 2 years and my wife was as well for 18 months.....
but with that said..we are all to be missionaries of our own faiths. We should want people to be as happy as we are. We should help people esteem to this...they think they are happy..but if they knew what we did...maybe they'd be even happier..
why figure something out yourself..when you can have help in order to get it done quickly and correctly? Doesn't the job get done faster when you have more hands involved?
Who creates excuses? Since when is religion seen as an excuse for your behavior...you should live your faith or don't be part of it...but if that is your choice..don't be apologetic...

A true Christian is a Missionary 24/7 for Jesus gave us this command to be his disciples and to spread the word. Mission one, bring people to salvation.
But also to help those in need, financial, emotional, physical and so on. (helping suicidals, drug addicts and so on) so even in you own town you are a missionary, when called by God.
