Right now all you can do is comfort her, and keep that subject off her mind. DO NOT buy her a puppy (at least not for a couple of months)

Get her a cat .
Really though I had to put down both of my dogs in the last 8 months and it hurts. Sometimes people feel that getting another dog right away helps and for some it might. Just be with her and ride it out and if she gets snappy and bitchy over the next week or so just let her vent on you . She is hurt and is not directing her anger toward you it is just her sadness . Share it with her and take some of the weight off of her shoulders and be a little extra nice and just let her know that you love her and are there.( that is part of a boyfriends job) That is all another person can do and I am sure that you have already done that.I feel for her because when my dogs got old and I had to let them go I felt like I lost part of my family because I did.
Good luck to you and her:
Hold her a little closer tonight. She needs it
Good luck brother

Buy her the same breed. Get her a puppy of that breed, name it the old dogs name with a Jr. in it(if that's what she wants) Try to buy a dog that looks a lot like the old one. oh but DO NOT buy it soon. Wait a month or two. And make it a perfect surprise.Give it to her at just the right moment!

Read her this:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Give her some time to grieve. Then there is nothing better to keep you busy- mind& body like a new puppy to take care of. Make sure she has grieved first, because she will be broken hearted and not want to accept the puppy. Make it a big surprise. With a ribbon around its collar and maybe after treating her to a nice dinner. The one that is lost to her will stay in her heart forever and never be forgotten. GOD BLESS YOU! and make this an experience from your heart to hers.

I wouldn't just go out and buy her a new one. Some people "replace" lost pets right away, but some people need time to grieve. If your shoes are worn out, you replace them; when you lose something that was near and dear to you, it is not simply a matter of finding a replacement. Wait until she's ready for another pet, then go from there.

You probably can't cheer her up much..I'm sure she loved her dog, and her dog loved her. The best thing you can do is be there for her, and be very understanding. Some people don't understand why people love their pets so much.

My best guess would be to buy her a new puppy. I wouldn't buy her the same breed of dog, because it might get her even more upset.

You should get a dog that's similar to the dead one, but alive.
