First of all, the rumor goes the it's from the mother's side, but it skips a generation, so you'd have to look to your mom's father.
But the reality is that I think the maternal lineage is a myth because my boyfriend's mother's side all has PERFECT heads of hair well into the 80's. His father's side, however, is all balding. He and his brother both started balding in high school.
So... Don't worry about predicting the future. Just watch for signs of baldness, and if you're incredibly insecure when they show, use Rogaine or Propecia.

I don't believe that whole "mother's side" thing. My dermatologist didn't say anything about that. Yes it can be genetics, it can be lots of other things too. Poor nutrition, reaction to a medicine...my father is bald, my mother is not...I started thinning when I turned 24 after having my daughter..this is VERY common. Alot of women start thinning after having children. I also have an Iron problem cause I don't eat alot of red meat. You might want to go to the doctor and have that checked. Mine suggested using Rogaine and it has helped ALOT! Taking an iron suplement was suggested too.

i have heard about the genetics but do not really believe it because all the males on my mons side have had full hair until they died. My dads side all the males were going bald by 19 years of age, including me.

well how is it on your dads side of the family??? but it could go either way... take care of your hair and hopefully you will not go bald....i would not worry about something that is going to happen later in life... try and be happy and do not borrow worries from the future....

Is you mom going bald? If she is then you will too, if she isn't then it is hard to tell. You can tell if your mom is going bald by her forehead. If it seems to be growing then she is porbebly going bald.

Try looking at your grandfathers head firstly, but its pot luck if you get the gene or not. Sorry.
You could check if you have prominent 'widows peaks'.
