My parents are going to Disney tomorrow morning. My dad bought my mom some tickets to go to the show. Since the tickets are like a credit card, he bought a tin gift card holder to give it to her. He is taking that down with him and their bags are going to be carried on.

I was just wondering if security is going to look thru the bags because of it.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I just don't want him to have the surprise ruined.

Thanks

He isn't carrying it, it will be in the luggage. It is really small, just big enough to hold some gift cards. Less than an inch think, about a half-inch and about four inches long or so.

It sounds like you're describing something similar to a normal money-clip or cigarette case. Your father should place this in his bags and not in his pocket. If it is in his pocket it will definitely set off the metal detector but if it is in his bag, the x-ray techs should be able to identify it as being harmless just by looking it on the x-ray scan. There's always a chance he will have to explain what it is, if the x-ray techs cannot identify the object but it sounds like a common enough item that the x-ray techs will be able to pass it without extra inspection.

You're not prohibited from carrying metal on the plane at all--- imagine what it would be like if no one could get their car keys through--- it just has to be in your bag instead of your pocket and it can't be a weapon.

Not a stupid question. Anything that the xray cannot see through will raise the suspicion of the TSA. All they will likely do is pull your father aside and screen his bag to identify that is in fact nothing more than a tin. After that you'll be on your way.

they would check it and search it fully. They do not joke around with anything. It may get a good look through though and a couple of questions about it.

It will set if off and they will either ask you to open the box or they will open it themselves.

Should be fine. The x-ray will be able to differentiate what it is likely to be.

If they are worth their salt, they will look in the box.
