Fireworks very much scare my 4.6 pound Yorkie. I deal with it by putting him in a pouch against my chest so he feels secure.
Hope this helps!!

The most important thing to do is to not comfort your dog when it gets scared. This seems counter intuitive, but when you respond to them, it just gives into them and tells them that it is ok to be afraid. The minute they aren't acting scared even for a minute give them lots of praise and a treat. As soon as they start acting scared again, ignore them. Since it's generally only a once a year type of thing it's kind of hard to work on, but some people use tapes/records/cds of noises and play them at various loudnesses using the same ignoring and rewarding during correct behavior training method. Eventually they will learn that it is ok.

I would recommend keeping the dog indoors. My friends' dog managed to escape from their yard (which she had never done before) on July 4th during fireworks and got herself lost.

Fireworks DO scare my dog. So what I do is just simply bring them inside the house until everything's over.

Yes. We have a Catahoula and a Pomeranian. They are frightened of fireworks and we let them in the house on the 4th of July or New Years Eve so that they feel safe. Dog treats also make them forget about it...

Sammie is going on 3 this july 2006 he hides under my bed.. his mate Dixie is going to be 2 on 11-4 this year, fireworks dont bother her that much but a few minutes ago, when she was out the kids next door were blowing some firecrackers off and she was highly aggravated.. so she unwound in the house by talking to me .. her puppies sarge & tizure were frightened so they hid up stairs..

most dogs dont like loud noises. so they hide in a quiet spot of the house.. there is nothing really you can do for them but to leave them alone and stay near by to calm them down by petting them and saying its okay

our older dog is "deathly afraid" of anything like that (even scares her when the kid across the street shoos "caps"). Now the rescued dog is "catching it". Last 4th...I read that you give them a big dinner of rice...which makes them tired. Bring them into the house and turn up the TV. Both were Ok...until someone shot off more after midnight. That was enough! This year bought some tranquilizers! we will see if this helps.

I had a dog once that bit fireworks! It burned her mouth but she still did it. She was a Cocker Spanial mix.
I think you should not expose your dog to anything that scares them. Find a spot where he/she can't hear and see them if you can.

My dog is scared to death of fireworks. When he's out, we just keep him right beside us and keep petting him to assure him it's okay. Otherwise, we have to put him in his kennel, or he'll run away. Just try to reassure your dog that it's okay, and try to pay special attention to it.
