Because the closer it gets to the 4th the more people around us light them off and my Westie shakes like crazy and I have to hold her for hours. I feel so bad for her.

Mine are afraid of fireworks also. I do the same as you, just stay with them and reassure them that all is going to be fine.

Yep I have a dog that is very scared of fireworks not only of fireworks but of any kind of booming sounds. He always hiding under something. The only why I get him to forget about the sound is I bring him in the house and give him his favorite treats.

My grandparents dog got so scared that he actually escaped and ran away from New Year's fireworks. We could never find him again.

Luckily for me in Australia, we don't have 4th July fireworks, but on New Year's when my border collie gets petrified he starts barking and getting agressive- I bring him inside, cuddle him, and turn some music on loudly so that he can't hear the fireworks anymore. The distractions help him calm down.

My dog was very afraid of fireworks. She was a small mix breed dog. I had a basement and would take her down and put her bed, food and water there, turn on a radio quietly in the background and she would go to sleep. I would check on her from time to time and pet her. She loved being away from the noises that scared her.

Go to the TSC or health food store and get it some Tryptophan. This is a naturally occuring amino acid in foods like Turkey and Beef. It is what makes everyone tired after eating Thanksgiving dinner! Follow the directions and this will help your dog stay relaxed during this trying time.

My mothers dog used to get so scared it would pee itself but we gave it Tryptophan and it kept calm.

I had a beagle mix who passed away in 2004. She was afraid of both fireworks and thunder.

Most dogs are afraid of loud noises

Thunder and fireworks. I think its because the noise affects their ears.

Of my five dogs, one is not afraid, three are, and one barks and wants to go out and get them.

I think fireworks that make any noise at all should be banned.
