Your question is intriguing. I taught in the People's Republic of China for 18 months, in the late 1980's.
In the modern era, the P.R.C. instituted economic reform long before political reform. You can argue that political reform is proceeding there now, but it is at a snail's pace compared to economic reform. But that was exactly the right thing to do! Look at the U.S.S.R.: in the same time frame, they did the opposite, and their empire has crumbled and they are in one big mess compared to China.
The U.S.A. has the (military) means to conquer the world right now; why doesn't it? Because we'd preside over a ruined world. Current administration policy-makers to the contrary, we just aren't that stupid.
Someone said China doesn't have the technology (to do likewise). This is just plain wrong. They do indeed have the technology. For example, whose reliable orbital rockets launch more U.S. satellite projects than any other country? One guess only, please.
AND China possesses the largest standing military force in the entire world. But they are smart enough to realize it's a lot easier and more rewarding, as you pointed out, to become the world's top economic powerhouse. They are proceeding to do that right now.

This question, and the vast majority of the answers on this page, are so far off base its really funny. Get the facts people, and you sure won't get them just by watching CNN & FOX. China is not a threat to the U.S., unless we become a threat to China. China will not take over the world, but China has the right to be a strong, rich, country, and to defend itself. I have no doubt whatsoever that those of you who have criticized China above have never actually been there. So, you really don't know what you're talking about. And, by the way, the richer China gets, the better it is for the U.S. because they will be able to buy more things from us.

I have many Chinese friends. None think the Chinese will take over the world. They all think there will be a revolution ( more or less like Tiannamen Square ) that will overthrow the Communist government. They are currently, and very slowly, allowing some change. Yes, it is only the economic stuff as they still stifle individual rights and freedom. But maybe twenty years when it occurs? Communism has never lasted long and has failed it's people in every instance, so, it is only a matter of time.

The Chinese have the ability (economic in 10 years, military in a few more decades) to actually try to conquer the world. Whether they will depends on what kind of manifest destiny the chinese people as a whole will choose. If many chinese choose the "middle kingdom" mentality where they think they are the center of everything (and there's plenty of evidence out there now that will show them this) they will try to conquer the world and that aint good. I seriously doubt however that anyone will bow down to China (except the sissy Europeans).

China WILL surpass the US as a superpower eventually, but, it will take such careful management that any misstep could dissolve the union of disparate peoples who make up what we consider 'China'.
While China, as a country, has experienced unprecedented growth and developement, most of the rural Chinese have actually seen a degradation in terms of their standard of living. China is pouring all of the profits from their new world position into economic centers and withholding resources from rural areas, which make up most of the population. This is a recipe for civil strife, civil war, or revolution. So, the China that we see overtake us may not be the same China that we know today.
And what the earlier poster was alluding to is that most of our foreign debt (i.e. bonds) is held by China. If China sold those bonds at below par, our economy would collapse. It would cost them money, but it would cost us a lot more. That is why deficit spending is so dangerous; we could be borrowing money from our enemies. The borrower is slave to the lender, so saith the Bible.

China can take over the world without firing a shot. I read in a Maxim magazine a few months ago that they can cripple the US economy just by withdrawing some money from some bank (sorry, I'm not an economy expert).
Also, just to rebut an earlier comment, it doesn't matter if they are a little behind on technology compared to the US. Canada has won the majority of war games against the US and all we have are rubber duckies. lol

They have man power but no tech. And even if they tried, the world would at the least end in a nuclear war before they took over...I think the only thing from China that will ever take over the world is there diseases.

Considering China's stupid birth control policies of the past few decades, they will in the next couple of decades have a mostly elderly population. If they did try to start a world war, we might be able to have some sort of giant microwave to knock out their pacemakers.
Seriously, China is decades behind in military technology. They might be able to damage us very severely. They would not win.
