Check w/ your vet. Sounds like something called a "hot spot." They are skin infections. Sometimes they are started by allergies. They can be VERY itchy, and often weep serum (the shiny stuff). Because these infections are actually under the skin, they are usually best treated with antibiotics. In the meantime, try to wash it with an anti-bacterial soap to keep the serum from crusting...but he'll be more comfortable faster if you see your vet.

My rottie used to get a sudden sore where the hair would be completely gone. It would be very red and could get infected. They would be about the size of a half dollar. The vet said they were hot spots. Couldn't see any rash, just a bright red spot. Whatever it is, try to keep him from licking it, that will just make it worse. Good luck.

Is this causing the dog to lose any hair? If so it could be mange. There are also several other parasites that are nearly invisible to the human eye that can irritate the hair follicles on a dog.

This sounds like a fungus or bacterial problem. You need to get your dog to a vet as soon as you can. It will keep spreading until treated. Good luck.
