The Bible commands you to fear God (Lev. 19:14,32; 25:36,43; Deut. 4:10, 6:2, 13, 24; 8:6; Josh. 4:24; 1 Sam. 12:14; 2 Chron. 19:7 Psa. 66:16, 67:7; and many others). Fear of God is mentioned far more than love of God. Just reading the many ways in which God kills those who displease him should be enough to make you quite terrified of him. You never know when he might decide that everyone in your town is wicked, and destroy the whole place with fire and brimstone!

Why would you be afraid of your closest friend? It works like this, Once God had a beautiful idea. God found this idea so lovely so perfect that he did not want to be without it for another second. So He/She thought a part of herself to have enough individuality to see it’s self as separate as an individual, as you. God did this so that he might have you to love and so that he might have you to love him. God sees you as his perfect creation. What is there to be afraid of in that?
Forget all the shrill nonsense you have heard about a God that wants to punish anyone. This is not religion its fear, an insult to the real loving God. Ask your heart it still remembers the truth in spite of all the lies you have been told about this foolish little God of vengeance. Love and blessings. Your brother Don

It it never a good attribute to be afraid of God. There is no reason what so ever that you should ever be afraid of God. God is Love. Why should anyone fear that?

Many religious people believe that the fear of God is what motivates people do do the right thing.
Some people believe that God is Love. If you believe that, it seems that one should never have to fear One who truly loves you.
There are stories in the religious texts of MANY religions which show their God as a mean and vengeful entity. I think it would not only be easy to fear such a God, it would also be wise.
Some people believe that God is Omnipotent--that is; God knows everything, including what is in your heart and mind.. If you believe in a God who is all seeing, and all powerful. You might believe that God would let you know if you are out of line.
And, if you further believe that God punishes those who do wrong, or even think wrong things, then yes, fear is smart.
What do YOU believe?

Proverbs 8:13
The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
Proverbs 19:23
The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.
Proverbs 16:6
By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.
1 Peters 1:17
And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:

Absolutely! The Bible admonishes us to, "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling". There is way too much "Jesus Light" happening in America today. God tells us that Vengance is His and that He is a God of wrath. The new translation, "The Message" is a really good Bible to read to understand exactly who God is and who He isn't. Reading your Bible will answer all your questions.

Of course! Bad is in our hearts. (Genesis 8:21) 21 And Jehovah began to smell a restful odor, and so Jehovah said in his heart: “Never again shall I call down evil upon the ground on man’s account, because the inclination of the heart of man is bad from his youth up; and never again shall I deal every living thing a blow just as I have done.
If we were not afraid of our parents, what would this world be like? I know it’s bad now but it would have to be much worse!
Now eventually your going to leave home. Who will keep you in line and away from this bad inclination? The best person would be our Creator. So it goes to reason the people that are doing everything they can to please their Creator have fewer problems in society.
Like your parents, even though you fear them which keeps you straight, you still love them just as they love you. It’s not a morbid fear. So it goes with our Creator who is often called our Father. He is only scary if your not pleasing Him.
There is more insight on how to please our Creator right here.

being 'afraid of God' is just a fancy way of saying respecting God. so yeah, its good.
he created u and died on the cross for u so u should love and respect him more than anything.
P.S.- if u saw the Passion of the Christ, it was seriously worse than that. Hollywood can only do but so much...

Yup. If you don't fear God (reverence: respect or awe for somebody or something), then 1) you don't have a clue what He's capable of, and 2) you'd feel no need to worship Him and you'd end up worhsipping something else, like yourself.
