The exercise ball is a great tool for strengthening those hard-to-get-to muscles (such as the TVA and erector spinae), as well as improving your balance and overall coordination.
See the exercises below to learn how to use your exercise ball to challenge your abs.

When I used to work, I had the exercise ball in my office and from time to time, I sit on it for 10-15 minutes, especially at lunch time when I could do it longer... the purpose of this ball while sitting on it is that it tones your TRANSVERSE ABDOMINUS (aka CORE) as long as your feet are off the floor and you balance on it using your ab muscles.
have a go...it's good. other exercises can also be done, once again for making use of your core.

Yes, they do work. get one for your size, or you will hurt yourself, though. buy weights (I suggest starting with 5, 10, and 20) and start with:
butterfly -laying down on ball in a table position and use medium weights, lift above headwith outstreached arms, bring down to the sides of the ball. 12 X
curl- sit on the ball with heavy weights. one arm at a time, curl your arms up. right, left 12 X each
sit up- lay down on a mat or carpet. hold the ball or weights in outstreched arms, and do sit ups.
I hope this helps!
