Religions for the most part were created during a time when most people still believed the earth to be flat and that is was the center of the Universe. Generation after generation has been indoctrinated into believing the religion they were born into without ever really questioning it. It's easier for them to ignore science than face the truth.

Of course religion must loose for other than good will always loose to good and truth will always overcome other than truth.
Now show me a "religion" that is based upon truth and I will show you a religion that does agree with truthful technology [do note "truthful technology"].
I guess what you seem to be thinking is that religious teachers do not really study their own books or maybe they have a different motive in what they do. Is that really what your question is about? If that be true I do agree with you. More time should be spent in study on the part of those who do in any way participate in a so called religion. This lack of study is the main cause of too much not being explained in religion.

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,
And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.
Psalm 33:6
He made the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades,
And the chambers of the south
Job 9:9
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
Psalm 8:3
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1
You alone are the LORD;
You have made heaven,
The heaven of heavens, with all their host,
The earth and everything on it,
The seas and all that is in them,
And You preserve them all.
The host of heaven worships You
Nehemiah 9:6
He stretches out the north over empty space;
He hangs the earth on nothing.
Job 26:7
The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Day unto day utters speech,
And night unto night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech nor language
Where their voice is not heard.
Their line has gone out through all the earth,
And their words to the end of the world.
Psalm 19

This is a very good question. I would rather that you visited 'www.irf.net' . There is a lot of material on this subject.
Becasue the quran is the word of Allah the Almigthy who is the only creator of this universe, he has mentioned so many clues in the quran that were not interpreted as detailed as now after the development of science. We all know that the science in not more than 150 to 200 years old and that the 20th century was the century of Science but Quran was revealed 1430 years ago and so many clues of science are there.
For instance:
Complete water cycle is mentioned in quran
Complete Gynaechology is written in quran
Quran told us 1430 years ago that the world is oval in shap.
Quran told us there are treasure of minerals under the earth.
Quran gives clue that there is 70:30 ratio of water and earth
Above all in quran Allah the Almighty says 'that he is the lord of all worlds (plural form) that clearly means that there are some other world except this one, where we live.
In short, todays science bears-up that every thing written in the quran, although is 1430 years old but fits on todays wolrd and development of science as golve.
If you are open to uncover the truth, I would urge you to take an english translation of quran and study.
Please visit that website too.

By the very purpose of existence both of them vary.
Religion - was most likely brought up in the world to keep people in control and fear. This instrument was supposed to be non-transient and self-righteous(i.e. unquestionable). The only way was to base it on beliefs and if u change those beliefs everyday they loose the strength everyday. But still there were some people who wanted to believe it but the conscience kicked in sometimes and wanted some explanation(any explanation wud do really because its just need to be satisifed) so came all the garbage and add-ups that eventually was disproved by science.
Science - the instrument is to progess the knowledge of our environment and its matters through consistent development and refinement of theories and the tests.
So, small answer for ur question, Religion doesn't have to explain all that as long as people want to believe what our ancestors have been believing. As long as we don't realize what it is and seek solace in it unquestionably.

There is no conflict between Christianity and technology. No technology would be possible if God had not set the laws of physics in place.
Christians explain the universe like this: Uni = One, Verse = Word. Universe = One Word. "God said let there be.."
This is just as plausible as any other theory out there. Big Bang certainly isn't an explanation.
