What are the different reasons that people find genealogy interesting? What are they getting out of it. And what are the different things that they are looking for.

It is nice to brag about ancestors. It gives you pedigree. Some people also want to find out why they are who they are and they look for an ancestor to blame. Quite frankly it is surprising who we are related to way back when. You would be surprised too probably.

My favorite sublects in school were Amer. History and World History. Now I have faces to include in historic events, [like an ancestor fighting on either side in Civil War]. I even found a slave owner.....YUK! Along the way I found my grandparents divorce papers with a lot of details and my other grandfather working in a coal mine for a short time. Since my Dad died when I was 6 and my Mom died when I was 29, I didn't know these things previously. Most recently, I've found that my Stewart line probably goes back to the year 956. Now that's mind boggling!

Maybe because in this impersonal 21st century where people are reduced to numbers in a computer data base, people want to find some human connection with the past and see what type of people their ancestors were.

Well I guess it would be cool if you checked out your family history and found that you are related to a famous person. My guess would be that people either want to connect to thier past and find thier roots, or see if they have any relations/orbloodlines (native american, etc) that could get them a college scholarship

History of the family, and mainly because it is cool. In some cultural circles it is considered the socially elite thing to do.
