According to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and Federal Bureau of Land Management, Styrofoam (the older stuff, not the newer polystyrene products), has an infinite lifespan. It will never degrade. However, there's no direct evidence to back that up. Certainly we can say that it will last longer than you will.

Styrofoam never breaks down. It is even worse than newsprint in a landfill.

About 10 seconds in acetone.

(Try it with some packing peanuts and nail polish remover in a jar. It's very cool.)

Actually it depends on if it's exposed to UV sunlight or not.
