I have 2 neo mastiffs, had 3 at one time. Beware-these dogs, although loving and loyal gentle giants, have some serious health issues. And be sure you go to a good breeder, who knows the story. I lost a 2yr. old neo to horrible, hip dysplasia. Surgery, medicine, and a short life filled with pain. Don't do that to yourself or the dog. I was also taken in by "backyard half assed breeders" who even had phoney papers. I spent over $4,000 trying to help my dog. I would've spent 4 million if it would have healed. But there was nothing more to do. H ip dysplasia is very, very common in this breed, along with cherry eye, skin conditions, joint and elbow/knee problems, bloat, and a common staph infection to skin, usually under chin and in "folds and wrinkles" Just be careful so you do not get a broken heart.

1-Please research the breed before you get one. Find out what they are supposed to do as a breed. Find out that the food and vet bills are high because if they get sick, the cost of treating them is higher. Look for rescue groups on the web and /or contact your veterinarian. Find out what some common problems are in the breed; if you go through a breeder to get one, ask them what kinds of problems they've had in their breeding lines.
2) Why do you want one?
3) Are you prepared to spend at least $600.00 in the pet's first year of life (vaccinations, heartworm medicine, stool-poop- testing and deworming; spaying or neutering; and figure one instance you'll be at the emergency vet for something...getting in the garbage, eating a bottle of tylenol, diarrhea for three days) If you are not prepared for this...please do not get ANY dog!!!
We see SO many people at the vet's office I work for who are SO unprepared for their pet's first year of life...I can't begin to tell you...but I'll try. Some people get them for prestige - like I'm cool, I have this big dog so I can intimidate you. Some people have gotten them because they were at a pet store (WRONG PLACE TO GET ONE- THEY ARE FROM PUPPY MILLS!!!) and this $600.00 dog who is a mixed breed was so cute they just had to get it. (Meanwhile, they are supporting puppy mills who breed indiscriminately just so they can make a buck) They don't come back for booster shots, so at 6 months of age, the dog gets parvo. Vet bills for this can EASILY run 600-1000 dollars...and you might not get a living dog even after you spend all that money- because parvo is not easy to treat. Or the dog is not started on heartworm prevention. Or gets such nasty fleas its hair is falling out and the dog has sores all over its body.
If, in good conscience, you can answer truthfully to the questions, then good luck finding your new family member!!

At the pound. There are plenty of big fighting dogs dumped there by people who had no business getting them in the first place.
