I'm a Republican and I attend a very liberal college and I tend to think I'm moderately conservative. I thought I'd preface my comment with that.
I believe the war we are fighting in Iraq to be an important step to bringing democracy to the middle east. A vast majority of the Iraqi people wanted change from Sadaam's tryrannical rule. Generally I think Iraqi's are greatful for our presence and our intervention.
That being said it's difficult to continue to support our involvement there for several reasons:
Namely, the rebels that the American military are fighting do not play by the same rules and do not abide by the same rules of engagement as do we. For example, the kidnapping and brutal murder of two soldiers about a week ago carried about by Al-Qaeda in Iraq. This shows how the "terrorists" or "splinter groups act." They aren't there to voice a different opinion, they're in Iraq to murder American military forces or Iraqi government officials.
Also of note is that a vast majority of rebels in Iraq are not Iraqis but instead Jordanians or Afghanis or Saudis or other nationalities. The nation is not in the midst of a Civil War, it is being held hostage by foreign terrorists.
Another troubling fact is that the United States government does not seem to have an exit strategy planned. For years it seems the goal was to hold free elections, train a police force that could hold its own, establish democracy for the future and bring our troops home.
Iraq has held several new elections, they have a Constitution, a Prime Minister and a Parlaiment. There is an Iraqi police force but one not capable of defending themselves and their homeland. The U.S. military should, in my opinion, focus on training the Iraqi police force to fend for themselves and uphold the democratic will of the Iraqi people.
Once that is accomplished I think it's our turn to take off, and re-deploy all of our soldiers back home to America. Once that's done, it is my belief that many of the foreign terrorists and fighters will stop fighting and return to their homelands. Why, you ask? Because no longer will there be American soldiers to kill. It's as simple as that. Terrorists aren't there to discourage Iraqi democracy, they're there to kill Americans. When we leave, I think they'll leave.
Should we leave now, NO, we should not. Should we train the police force as fast as we can, and ensure they are ready to protect there homeland, YES we should. Then and only then, and finally then should we leave.

No, should we make cars illegal because hundreds of innocent people are being killed in them every day? The troops volunteered, can't say the same about the poor women and children who were just going down the road to a gallon of milk and never made it back home.

I agree with Tec. If we leave there now, we will end up back there again. We should finish up the mission. Then support the Iraqi Government so that we don't have to go back down this road later. I would love to have them all back home with their families, but it is a job they choose to do. We need to support the troops until they come home.

Probably not. I hate that our soldiers are losing their lives. I wish there was some way we could keep them safer. Maybe someday wars will not be fought with people. Robots are more suited for war. I hope the day will soon arrive that we will be able to bring all of our troops home!

Absolutely not! We do not rest the moral and polotical reasons for war on casualty count. You wage war based on whether or not you can win, and more importantly, whether or not you are right. Deposing Sadaam and bringing freedom to Iraq is worth whatever cost is needed to do it- short of the destruction of this great nation.
