DON'T do what the people before me have told you.
I don't know what your reasons are for wanting to get rid of them but that's your business. Use 2,4 -D. You can usually buy this at your local garden supply store.
Follow the label!
Do not cut the trees first (or ever) it must be applied to the foliage and it needs time (at least 3 weeks) to be absorbed.

I'm wondering if you are talking about Chinese Sumac (Ailanthus altissima) , commonly called Tree of Heaven? Grows everywhere, like crazy, stinks, can't kill it for anything? This is a *MAJOR* invasive species. I've given you a link below, but not much hope. Lots of complaining folks on that site, this one hopeful suggestion, some others there as well.
"Enchanted by the "volunteer" that sprang up under the canopy of my large mulberry, I mistakenly allowed it to remain for a year. It shot up thru branches heading, apparently, for heaven. This is a semi-arid area, so any plant that vigorous is a miracle or a horror. This one soon proved the latter. I sawed the trunk off a foot above ground and the stub sprouted almost immediately. I took a black plastic plant-nursery pot and covered the holes with duct tape, put it over the stump, placed a large rock on top and left it for at least a year. The stump rotted away in time, and luckily I was able to pull the few seedlings dropped. Suckers were not a problem. Whew!"
What my husband (a restoration ecologist) does for stubborn invasives is the "cut and paint" method. After cutting, he immediately paints the cut surface only with a super-strong solution of weed killer so that it is directly absorbed into the root system to kill it. Don't know if that would work for this. I'll ask him tonite for more info.

Hi, newspaper is okay, it eventually disintegrates after a while from the moisture. Also, it adds organic material back into the soil and that's good. But, it's short-term and you have to put it down fairly often. I think you would be more satisfied if you put a double layer of the landscaping material around your plants and cover with mulch. It allow water to get to your plants and prevents weeds from growing. It looks like black cloth and comes in a roll. You can buy it at Lowes or similar type stores. Hope this helps. Lori

All you have to do is pour white vinegar on the roots. This will kill the sumac. It will also kill the grass and weeds that you pour it on. But it is a natural ingredient and won't poison the air or water. I hope this helps.

Copper sulfate which probably is still available at most hardware stores is the tried and true tree killer. Cut to a stump and drill a hole in base and fill with C S and just wait. Simple and easy. Also if the tree is large several spaced holes is more sure.

Cut them down and as soon as they start sprouting again apply a good weed killer such as Roundup. I've done this for various trees that I've cut down and they resprouted. You may have to reapply the weed killer a few times but it does work.

Birdgirl, you obviously haven't had the sumac tree roots mess with your plumbing. You do know that they spread, that they don't just stay in one place? They can take over your whole yard.
