You can adopt one from the SPCA or animal control or a Chihuahua rescue group. You will be saving a life and get lots of "extras" for one low price.

You must live up north or something. I have a chihauhua paid 75 with papers. good dog. I also have a boston terrier paid 350 was suppose to be 500 great great great dog very smart. If you are seriously wanting a chihauhua i'm in mississippi i haven't seen them go above 150 really. I suggest trying to get a dog that isn't a certain breed. A mixed breed dog is generally smarter. but if you want an AKC and not wanting to pay the price then there might be a problem. I wasn't particular in a boston terrier for some reason i fell in love with this dog and it took a lot of begging. i love her with all my heart. I had this dog house trained no more than 2 weeks.

The best type of dog to get is the one that fits your life style. Do some research on some of your favorite breeds and find out which one best conforms to your daily routine. If you are a jogger, you may want a jogging partner. If you are a homebody, you probably need a less energetic dog. If you other pets or small children you need a dog that is naturally compatible with them.
Check out these sites for some good info in helping you decide what dog to get.

This is yahoo's breed recommend er. It ask questions then recommends breeds based on your answers. It's a good start but you still need to research a breed before you buy one.

Please avoid petshops and most online "puppy stores." These dogs come from puppy mills. Puppy mills are horrible and if you aren't concerned with that, then at least be concerned with the fact that you pay top dollar for a dog that has no real pedigree and could have health problems. Stick with top breeders and remember to learn about who your buying the dog from. This person will help you through the first year or two of owning your dog.

The best dog to get is usually a mut. A chihauhua is good for people that have ashma but are very nervous dogs. I have a pom that is sweet but super active. It depends on what kind of dog you want a lap dog or a dog that you can run around with outside. Nobody can tell you what is the best dog, when you see the right one, you will know.

You need to provide more information. The best type of dog for what? How much space where you live? Would the dog be in or out? How large is your yard? Any kids? If yes, how old and how many? Are you looking for a companion dog? A hunter? A protective dog? Friendly dog? Mean, threatening dog?
Do your research. Go to www.ask.com and ask the question "how to select a dog" to get links to useful advice.
p.s.: the best dog may be found at your community animal shelter!

It really depends on what size and if there is any small children that it will be around. I am guessing she is looking into a toy breed. Dogs like Yorkshire Terriers and Maltese must be groomed every other day. Then there is Chinese Crested who should not be left alone. As far as small children stay away from Miniature Pinschers. I have heard good things about Italian Greyhounds. For more info check out this site: http://www.toybreeds.com/selectingatoybreed.htm
As far as price anything pure bred will be a bit on the pricey side.

HmmmM word of advice... go to the nearest animal shelter and get a dog. :( poor animals are being killed an all since they can't find families... and i'm sure you can find a chihauhua there. but yea... dogs shouldn't really matter what breed they are... it's a dog you'll love it no matter what it is... it's like a child... how can you pick what kind of child you want ... i don't know i'm talking nonsense lol.

You can't get a dog based on its cuteness or size as it actually should relate to your lifestyle. For example if you choose a Jack Russell Terrier, then, you will need this is a hyper dog which requires a lot of energy and playing. If you're athletic, sporty or loves the outdoors, then, go for a large breed or a sporty dog like a Lab for example. You cannot base it on cost...You must relate it to your lifestyle and what your personality is like.

Oooh oooh! Pick me! O.K. I looooooove chihuahuas but if they are too expensive then I would get a different small dog. Here are my suggestions scottish terrier(adorable!),pomeranian(fluffy!),maltese(they have long hair)or a big dog like a husky, a masiff, a lab, a retriver or a shiba inu(the have cute fur!). I know I sound weird but I am a dog addict!
