I have a trial version of XP Home.
Will the XP home upgrade work?
or do I have to buy the full version?

While that upgrade might work, the trial version puts an entry in the registry that after the trial time is up, it stops working. When that happens, the upgrade will stop working also. So you will need to purchase a copy. (And yes, Pro is more stable)
