Assuming that we are talking about the same thing:
Lucifer was one of God's angels, but at one point it led a revolt against God because it wanted more power. It, along with the rest of the revolting angels were cast into Hell and Lucifer was given the power to reign there as Satan.
I am not positive where exactly this is backed up in te Bible, beleive the story has somewhat been peiced together. This is only my recollection of what I have heard, so take it with a grain of salt.

We don't really know a lot, because the Bible does not tell us a lot. Lucifer was the arch angel who rebelled against God with one third of the angels. He was replaced by Michael the present arch angel and now has access to heaven and earth where he has been given power of the air over the earth. He is not in Hell, no one is there yet, but after his judgment he will be cast there. He is able to ascend into heaven where he functions as the "accuser of the brethren". The story of him being thrown out of heaven is a prophecy which will take place during the great tribulation on earth. He was created on the first day of creation and did not rebel until after creation was completed because when God finished creating He look at it and declared that everything was good.

Well, it's difficult to know who or what Lucifer is. Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 are commonly cited as his biography, but in reality, those passages refer to kings, not Satan. Basically, Satan is a being who's sole purpose is the defeat of God. He uses temptation, sin, doubt, and the occult to keep people away from God's message. As a result, Satan/Lucifer is the most evil being in Creation, but is, as of now, under the feet of Christ.

Lucifer used to be an angel the lead of praise to God. He rebeled I'm not sure if he wanted to take over God's throne or just plain rebelled and God threw him down on the earth. 3,000 other angels rebelled against God and He kicked them out of Heaven. Which are called fallen-angels, aka demons. They follow Satan(Lucifer).

I'm sorry ~ but I simply couldn't resist....the Stones know! :o)

Please allow me to introduce myself
Im a man of wealth and taste
Ive been around for a long, long year
Stole many a mans soul and faith
And I was round when jesus christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
I stuck around st. petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank
Held a generals rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
I shouted out,
Who killed the kennedys?
When after all
It was you and me
Let me please introduce myself
Im a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached bombay
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But whats confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me lucifer
cause Im in need of some restraint
So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or Ill lay your soul to waste, um yeah
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down
Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
Tell me baby, whats my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, whats my name
I tell you one time, youre to blame

the story of lucifer is the most tragic love story of all...

lucifer was the most beautiful angel and he was so-named because he was the light-bearer. he was God's most beloved among his angels.

then God created man in his own image and commanded all creatures from heaven and earth to pay homage to his creation to which lucifer disobeyed because he firmly believed that man was a lowly creature compared to his kind and to God, that he would only love God and no one else. Thus, lucifer started the first sin, pride. God was enraged with his pride and disobedience that he cast lucifer out from heaven and as he fell down to hell his face got disfigured from his anger and God's blinding light and from thereon he became the ugliest and most evil creature of all, with nothing in mind to avenge himself by destroying mankind.

Don't be so hard on my bud lucifer. He tried to be nice, it just wasn't him. I showed him a few tricks, and he made the best of them, but he still is behind the times, as far as evil is concerned..hehehe

Christians see him as Satan before the rift, when he was still the morning star. The greeks see him as the morning star as well. He is also considered, with Diana, to be the parent of Aradia, the Queen of the witches.

He is a literary device to illustrate the supposed dualistic nature of the universe...good vs evil, light vs dark,etc...of course your experience will depend on the perspective you choose to take.

There was an event that happened before creation in which Satan tried to take God's place. His punishment was that he was sent to hell.
