They can only because when a phone recieves a signal it sort of releases a huge amount of electromagnetic waves which can spark petrolium pumps but it is very rare and other factors must be present or else if is a slim chance they can start a fire. I would say the chance just a cell phone with nothing but a petrolium pump in a control area would cause a fire would probably be >1%

In a word no. This is due to the amount of static the human body produces and when the amount of static electricity is at the maximum level for this to occur a charge will be sent to ignite the vapor within the air to cause fire at the pump. Cell phones do not contribute to static electricity ignitions.

A mobile phone if faulty could produce an incendive spark (as could many gadgets with batteries). Electrical eqipment for use where explosive flammable vapour may be present has to be designed so that under no circumstances can it produce an incendive spark or that the explosion is safely confined (eg within the casing of an electric motor). OK it is very unlikely but if everyone made a practice of using their phone whilst filling their tank accidents would occur

An inventive person can use any tool as part of a process to accomplish any task. For example, insurgents in Iraq use cell phones to set off roadside bombs. If a gas pump were nearby, I'm guessing it would start a fire.

No, they have tested this myth on a show called Mythbusters. Fires at gas stations usually are caused by some sort of static electricity, not radio frequencies which cell phones work off of. :)

Jamie and Adam proved this one busted on Mythbusters.

You would have a better chance of getting back in your car and then making contact with the nozzle without first grounding yourself. See warning at all pumps.

Myth busters, saw that one, great, you are more likely to blow up at the gas pump by wearing polyester and creating a static spark

No, I watched an episode of myth busters on discovery channel, they did everything they could to make a cell phone cause an explosion, but it did not work. You might be able to find it on their web site.
