Retaliation is reactionary and vengeful.

Defense is often inactive until a provocation and done for self-protection.

Retaliation can be unlawful and illegal whereas defense can be lawful and legal.

In other words, don't hit. It can be misinterpreted. It is safer and more peaceable to walk away and, most times, less dangerous.

Retaliation requires that a first move has already been made against you. Retaliation implies aggression against someone else while defense merely requires preventing aggression against yourself.
