I was wondering if the same were true for dogs? I only ask because two of my dogs always give their right paw when asked and my other gives his left.

I think it depends which paw you trained them to give you because my always gave me her right one until I taught her right paw and left paw. Now she gives the one i ask for or when i just say "give me paw" she somtimes gives me right and sometimes the left one.

Prior to this question, it never crossed my mind.
I'm assuming that, just like humans, some are left and some are right.
South paws RULE!

That's funny.
Maybe they do have "handed-ness"
My first dog used to alternate. Give me one paw, then the other, then eventually both (sit up) if I didn't give him the attention or treat he was after. Maybe he was ambidextrous!

Believe it or not, different animals have different handedness. For example, apparently all polar bears are left-handed. But yes, I'm sure there is an easy test, and it's probably similar to tests for humans. Things like getting a person to catch an item thrown to them, or observing with which hand they attack with first.

I nver would have really thought to pay attention...could just be their preference. I think our dogs just give whichever paw is closest. Then they alternate to get more petting lol

Good question.. you might ask your vet. Perhaps they have some idea about that answer! Mine uses her right paw when she shakes.

yes, it's true for most animals.
Most horse are left-handed, that is they prefer to turn left if given a choice.
