My friend's 16 yr old daughter made the 3rd round in Canadian Idol and was told to get a sponsor so she could take more voice lessons before coming back next year. How do you go about this? The family cannot afford a lot, but this girl has real talent.

What a lucky young lady to have a friend like you to help her find a way to get voice lessons!!

If they specifically told her to get more training, odds are they recognized a lack of mastery in a particular area of singing. That's excellent feedback, and easier than you think to solve, especially since she is still school age, and she needs someone to evaluate and beef up her fundamentals.

So many young people get swept up in the music business without having good fundamentals, and they go nowhere because they develop vocal cord problems or a list of other issues that keep them from achieving their dreams.

Enlist the help of her first line, free resources: school music teacher, church music director etc. If there is a university in your area, approach the dean of the vocal music department, perhaps they or their students would love to tutor a willing young person.

These people are professionals and they associate with other professionals. If or when she needs instruction they can't provide, they know where to find it and can call in favors to help make sure she gets it.

Good Luck!!
