I recently adpoted a cat, well she adpoted me. Unbenouced to my surprise she became a wonderful mommy of five kittens, well to get to the point she is always hungry!!! That is five minutes after she has just eaten. I now find her eating mice, birds., But last night i witnessed her devower an entire rat!!!! Is was not a little rat it was big, she ate the head first then it's feet, then it's body, and the tail leaving only the fur. Now is my cat a savege beast or just one hungry mommy? P.S. first time cat owner.

It could be a few things. One: She is protecting her litter from random pests, then eating the kill. Keep her in a "safe" place with her litter. (Rats, snakes, other cats, even fleas can and will kill kittens)
Nursing mothers are ALWAYS hungry, keep in mind the brood they have to keep up with to feed...yes, the food intake dramatically increases.
Let her find an indoor area that is quiet, slightly dark and very safe for her litter, she will chill on the murderous rampage. Keep plenty of food and water out for her. Water is a big must.
ALSO, handle the kittens!! This will keep any feral nastiness out of them.
Best of luck!

That is a cat. That's what they do. That is why they like to bat toy around and chase them. Your cat is a cat that goes outside so she chases and catches the critters that they like. Just wait one morning she will bring you some nice dead rat or bird, don't get upset she will just be trying to share her food with you and take care of you like you do her. Good luck first time cat owner

You fool she is a cat, cats are preditors and birds and rodents are its prey, they help us by keeping down the population of those things, i hate rats. Its possible you arent feeding her enough but her natural tendency is to hunt even if she is well fed. A nursing cat needs about twice the ammount of food as a regular at home cat. you can find websites about cats and their normal lives on line and its time to learn more about your animal.

This cat has been outside for sometime. It will be a good mouse trap indoors if you let her in. Have her fixed. No more kittens! It is just in their nature to do that. And she will need extra food and water while she is feeding the babies!

Your cat would be an excellent barn cat! Talk about a good mouser!
Are you giving her regular cat food? Good quality stuff made for nursing cats? I am sure she needs extra nutients, but maybe she just likes the fresh meat. Nasty to watch though, isnt it?

You are feeding her a food low in protein. Cats have to get a lot of protien in their diets. They don't need any plant material, despite what cat food manufacturers say.
Go to naturapet.com for all you need to know about cat nutrition.
A nursing mom needs lots of extra good quality food. Get canned food and let her eat as much as she wants.
