1. Shampoo hair 2. Towel blot the hair (if the hair is gray or severely damaged use a protein boost after towel blotting.) 3. Proceed to roll hair on rods...always make sure the very ends of hair on inside your perm paper....(If the the person has breakage, you can use more than one perm paper, just layer them up the whole section of the hair to cover the broken areas.) And always spray water on your section after you've put on your perm paper. 4. Go get 4-5 towels, your perm solutions, and your cotton wrap...and your timer....after you apply a towel around your clients neck and give them one just in case of the solution running..apply cotton strip around the entire perimeter of your curlers....Then apply waving lotion.....use all of it, wait for the cotton to soak up the excess solution, Then throw soaked cotton away ,then cover the head up with plastic bag and clip shut..( I find clipping the front of the head is easiest for me..) then replace neck towel, just incase some has leaked onto their skin....( you never know who's going to have an allergic reaction...) then wait for your timer to ring....Proceed to the shampoo bowl and Rinse the hair out for 5 minutes with luke warm water.....if the client has fine hair or normal density.....blot their hair after you rinse, and just let them set there and air neutralize for 5 minutes....if they have thick hair and /or their hair doesn't dry fast, blot their hair very well and place them under the hair dryer from 5-15 minutes, you'll want their hair as dry as possible, that way the neutralizer will take...Then apply neutralizer, let that sit on for 5 minutes, then rinse for 5 minutes....If you used a protein boost because of dried, colored , porous hair or people who take medications...you can also apply more protein boost afterwards...to put some vitamins back in their hair...And then the styling is up too you..If I told you some things that you already know...I don't mean to patronize you or sound condescending.....I just had to write down step for step that way I didn't mess up....Good Luck

I just read the first answer which was posted while I was typing my answer. It is important to note that the directions I gave below are for perming a white person's hair. The end result will be curly hair. If a person is black, perming is straightening the hair. I have always thought that it is so wild that what is called the same thing is actually a totally opposite thing.

I just had a perm yesterday, so it's still fresh in my mind!

The technician washes my hair with shampoo. She then rolls my hair on rods, putting a perm paper in front of and behind each strand of hair as she is rolling it.

She then puts on the perm solution which stays on about 20 minutes. It's less time for color treated hair.

When the time is up she rinses my hair while it is still in the rods. After rinsing she uses paper towels to blot my head to take all of the excess moisture out of my hair. If you don't get the water out, the next step - the neutralizer - will not work properly. Hair can only hold so much liquid.

After blotting my whole head, she puts on the neutralizer. It stays on about 5 minutes. This is a very important step.

After 5 minutes of neutralizer, she rinses my head again while my hair is still in rods.

She then takes my hair out of the rods and give it a very light shampoo.

She rinses the shampoo then styles it and I'm done!

The whole thing takes about an hour and 15 minutes.

Hope this helps.
