You have a good point; I have nothing to add because that was succinct. I just wanted to let you know that I agree that it's sad.

For a new Christian, like I was a few years back, the Bible was a bit much for me, meaning, I needed it interputed(sp?) for me. I also read a few books just to see what the whole Christian thing was about. (Which the Left Behind did not do, as most things in there are against what the Bible says, but anyway...)
Look at it this way, even if they aren't reading the Bible, at least they are reading 'good' books and not trashy books. It's a step in the right direction.

I am sorry to say this to you dear, but "Your Father" didn't write that book, a bunch of misguided men who lived thousands of years ago wrote that book, as a way to control the minds of an uneducated rabble. Women had no hand in writing the Bibles of the Western religions, although there was the Gospel according to Mary the Gnostic, (Mary Magdalen) and her's as well as The Gospel according to Thomas the Gnostic were eliminated by the Council of the Nazarene headed by Emperor Constantine, who by the way stayed a pagan until he was about to die. It's time to wake up and realize you have been lied to. It doesn't mean that Jesus wasn't here, it's just that his story was twisted to suit the needs of a "Good 'ol Boys" club who thought the world was flat, and that the Universe revolved around the earth. The Bible is metaphoric in nature and not to be taken literally.

I think it's not as cut and dried as you are making it. Many people read BOTH the Bible and good Christian books. There is no shame in reading the writings of Chuck Swindoll or Francis Schaeffer. I find the writings of great men (and women) very encouraging in my Christian walk. They encourage me to read the Bible and help me understand it. I also enjoy Christian fiction. Christians need to rest and relax, too, and I like to read books that will not include things that Christians consider immoral or objectionable.
But you are right -- Christians first priority must be to read the Bible.

In some cases I think it is because they do not have the spirit. Remember the apostles did not understand what Christ had taught them until they recieved the spirit. We are no better. Until we recieve the spirit we can have knowledge, but not wisdom. We can memorize scripture, but we don't get the full meaning of it without the spirit. That's why we see the academic fools like Dominic Crossan or Elaine Pagels on the discovery channel. They could spend the rest of their life studying and never get the meaning. I fear that many people who call themselves christian have never recieved the spirit and because of this they are desperate to find the meaning of the bible. Looking to men to teach you is fine, but only if the spirit is inside of you so that you will have understanding.

Sadly, I think it is sometimes a point of laziness. Or it could be that some Christians think that the Word of God is too old and does not contain the truth they are looking for. However, as you seem to know, God's Word contains all we need. Not that I am saying that Christian books are bad, they should not take priority over the Bible though.

Your question is pretty ignorant. How do you know that many Christians haven't read the Bible? Most of the ones I know, read it on a regular basis. They just don't read it like a novel, as they would the others you cited.
By the way, your father didn't write the Bible. Hundreds of men thousands of years ago did. That probably explains all the errors, half-truths, and simple fairy tales in it.

Amen!
People want a quick and easy answer to everything hoping that they can find a book that will let them live the sinful that they are and tell them that they a still all right before God. But the would be a lie and a death sentence for them, with eternal punishment in hell and the lake of fire.

That is so true. The answers are certainly not going to be found in these books. Don't get me wrong, I know some of these books are very helpful, but there is no substitute for the word of God.

Very true. I'm not completely sure, but it's very hard to understand everything it's trying to say. The terms and phrases have long since been forgotten and I guess, as human beings, our mind is lazy. Then again, I own a KJV. I myself am guilty. I haven't completely read the bible here myself, but I have read the LB and PDL.

Because they're superficial christians.
It's more impressive to have every hot christian book ever published, rather than being a good person and showing that you are following what you believe.
