She is about 5 1/2 lbs, and we live in WY, winter is VERY hard on her, we can't see her in the snow sometimes, also, she is spayed, and my others too! Thanks for all the input!

I have a miniature pinscher and we litter trained him for several reasons. He is very tiny and his feet are practically non exsistant..lol. We got him when he was 3 months old and weighed 2 lbs. Winter was approaching and we didn't want his little feet to freeze in the snow. Another reason is...we like to go on day trips. Not very often, but I didn't want to worry about getting home to let the dog out. It is NOT a lazy way out. It is harder and takes longer to litter train than it does to teach your animal to go outside. You just have to be consistant and when you think your puppy needs to go, sit him in the box and sit with him. Talk to him, coo to him, but don't let him out. If you catch him midstream going on your living room floor, scoop him up and sit him in his litter box. I love it. It has made life so much easier for us. We don't have to worry about coming home to accidents. Anyway, dogs are more particular when it comes to their box. It has to be cleaned every single day or Zeus won't use it. He'll hold it and whine but he won't go in it. Picky critters. If you choose to litter train...I wish you luck. It's wonderful. the downside is...he won't go anywhere but the litterbox. Not even outside. LOL

Forget the litterbox training...frankly it's a lazy way out. You need to reward your pup for going outside. It sounds like outside potty time is a bad trip for her. Make it fun to start, then increase rewards for when she goes (pets and love, maybe a treat, but if you can avoid that it's best).

Also, you need to clean the potty smell out of the house, even if you can't smell it, odds are the pup can.

NEVER yell at or hit your puppy, this only adds to bad behavoir.

My dog is trained on a litterbox and it is great! My husband was the one who trained him. Every time Mello peed where he wasn't supposed to he would put his face in it (dogs hate that), and then he placed him in his litterbox to show him where he was really supposed to go. Every time he or I would see Mello try to pee outside of his litterbox we would rush to take him to pee in the box. It helps if they "make" in the box because then it has their smell. Mello would stay in his litterbox for about 10-15 minutes, then we would call him out. This took about 3-4 weeks before he finally learned where "potty" was. You cannot be sweet and nice when doing this. A voice with authority and sticking to your word is the only way your dog will do what you ask.

There is also this spray that is called "Anti Icky Poo" or "Nature's Mircale" which helps to take out their urine smell from carpet, wood, tile and concrete. It makes sure that they don't pee there again.

Now, this may increasingly sound cruel, but at night, put your canine in a cage. This is called "Cage training" It makes the canine not want to pee or crap in it's cage, so it has to attend. Ready would teach it. And you must take it outside a lot. And no longer only for a pair minutes. Walk it and let it smell around. If it sees yet another dog pee'd it's going to.

there are dog litter boxes. i can see use if there is no outside, like a big city. but dogs need outside to poop. they wipe their butts on the grass rather than your floor. grass doesn't hurt her rear but litter would, she would probably end up at the vet with a vagnal or anal infection, that costs big bucks. dogs need to be taken out every four or so hours, six is pushing it. what people don't understand about dogs is that they need to go to the bathroom as often as a person. if not allowed to then they will break all the rules.
i rescue animals and this is what i do. this is mainly for peeing, you still need to take her out to poop. there are puppy pads (flat plastic backed with a scent on them that make dogs want to pee on them). you can buy the @ petsmart or a place like that. they are the easiest thing i have ever found to use for dogs. put them where she is having accidents then slowly (weeks) move them all to the one spot you want her to use when you can't take her out (change them every day - get rank real fast, just toss in gargage.) when she doesn't use that spot after weeks of training, take her to the accident spot (put her nose near it to let her smell it, but not in it) get close to her face after smelling, say real loud "NO". then take her to the new spot that you have deemed the good spot and let her smell it and pet her on the head and say lovingly "GOOD GIRL, GOOD GIRL." she will require X amount of times until she gets it. this also shows her you are the alpha dog and she will learn to mind you, IF you are consistent and even tempered. good luck. thanks for being a good animommie. most of all get your animal fixed (prevents mamory cancer)!
