Has anyone had to deal w/this problem & what can be done to help him stop? He has other behavior problems that he takes medication for & the Dr said this could be a sign of OCD.

It sounds like he may have some deep rooted feelings and being he is so young, he is unable to express to anyone properly what is bothering him.

Does this boy go for any child psychology? He may need to do this as well as take his medication. Medication alone, can only do so much. But with the proper therapy and medication, could mean a whole world's difference for that little boy.

I wish him good luck and I hope he feels better soon. I hope I was some what helpful!

It does sound like OCD does he engage in other self injurous behaviors or PICA which is eating things that most people don't liek Chalk and stuff. Looking at things superficial will give you superficial answers. There could be multiple causes such as OCD, Dematitis, Ecesma and of course other nerological disorders. Not only does he need medication but counseling as well. so does the family. Children develop through adult interaction and genetic's. Which means they are effected both internal and external. They could be things that are distubing him via internal "genetic's" and external "learned and physical interaction". He may not be stimulated enough in his external enviroment and because of bad learning skills and lack of direction has found bad ways to stimulate himself. some kids pick there noses and if parents, don't redirect them they can do so until bleeding occurs. He might be getting the attention thing from adults such as contact in the area of band aids and wound care from people who would otherwise ignore him. If adult interaction mixed with lots of love is generated, I'll bet this and other poor behaviors will slowly subside.

it very well could be the best thing to do is take hom to a mental health doctor and be treated .there are a lot of disorders that can have this as a symptom the best thing is to get a diagnossis and get medication for him.i dont know how to get him to stop but with medication it can help to control the need to do it but either way seek the mental health doctors and make sure you do not give up til there is a diagnosis in place and a treatment .some doctors will ignore these proeblems thinking they will outgrow them .not true .seek help

also forgot about this did he do this before the medicine for the other problems my son took prozac and tried to cut his bosy with scissors stuff he didnt do before the medicine he may be having a negative reaction to the meds he is on but again i stress take him to a mental health doctor .and look for one that specialises in kids and can also deal with what he has going on already

First, make sure it's not some form of child abuse.

Secondly, medications are doing a lot of harm to people and the doctors aren't going to tell you that. Stop the medication for a week or so to see if there's a difference. If the itching stops and he was taking several medications start him back up one medication per week to see which one is affecting him adversely.

And make sure it's not coming from his clothing, his bed, flowers that are around, etc.

Also you might want to try lotioning him with some care cream once or twice, on the daily bases.

These OCD diagnoses are a bit premature. More likely it is a form of an anxiety disorder known as dermatotillomania. The child needs to see a mental health professional as soon as possible. He is not doing it to be difficult, it can be a serious, and even dangerous problem in itself due to germs, but more important is finding the source of WHY a 5 yr old kid is having anxiety problems.

The doctor could be right. In a way, I hope he is.

Does the boy have problems with his home or school life? Sometimes things like that can lead to unhealthy behaviors.

My little brother used to have trouble with ADHD when he was this boy's age- and a cup of coffee in the morning actually helped control it. At least, I don't think it will hurt though the doctor should be told.
