eating wild mushrooms is a gamble,in some species the edible ones and poisonous ones are so much alike even experts make mistakes, and just because you don't get sick immediately doesn't mean you're OK, some species take three days or so for the poison to hit you, but if your going to do it, learn as much as you can beforehand and always keep part of what you eat set aside in case you have to go to the hospital they can identify it

Well, if you come from Australia, down in the Victorian region, if we see a mushroom a good way to tell is to run a fingernail across the top of it. - If it turns a yellow colour it is poisonous - well it would give you a good ol tummy ache at the very least.

I have a joke for you: Q:/ What is the smallest room in the world?
A:/ A mushroom!!!!!!!!!!!

the ones at supermarkets fruit stand(provoded the people are reputable) are okay but do not go out inot the woods or yard or cow field and pick mushroooms for human consumption or anything else for that matter mushrooms have nerotoxins that attach to the nerve endings in your body and they have a combation of these so if you did eat these things and were taken to the hospital then most likely the doctor and staff would be able to treat one toxin but not all of them at the same time and well to be honest do you really want the pleasure of having your stomach pumped out with charcol(I think not) so to be safe the ones that are in markets made for human consumption

There are field guides available at the bookstore or on line. Plz be super careful though. Even professional mushroom hunters have turned up dead by accident.
Audobon has one and I believe Golden Books has one..
I have eaten wild mushrooms before but I was younger and dumber then too.

THERE IS NO GENERAL TEST FOR POISONOUS MUSHROOMS. DO NOT BELIEVE ANYONE THAT GIVES YOU GENERAL GUIDELINES.

The only way to be sure is to make a positive identification, and for that you need to know a lot about mushrooms.

The most deadly mushrooms (Amanita Verna, Amanita Phalloides) are all-white and taste delicious.

If you want to pick your own, only do it with the professionals on a mushroom hunt. Its not the time of year right now, in autumn. DON'T guess, unless you fancy hanging out in hospitals.

The ones you buy from the supermarket or grocery store or deli are edible.

The ones you find in the yard stay the hell away from and save yourself all the trouble/risk of hospitalization. lol

Cheers
