Hi all

I'm just wondering, when commercial airlines fly to various cities around Australia (say for example, I'm from Cairns, and I fly to Melbourne), would they go along the coast or cut through the land? and how about Brisbane? I'm guessing they fly along the coast?

Best answer will be rewarded.

Aviation traffic fly along the routes that are outlined by the countries aviation authority. Routes are not decided on by airlines. So, depending on where an airliner is going, it will be designated a specific route based on information from the aviation authority and then variations are given by air traffic control and are also based on weather, other traffic, and the type of aircraft. So, a flight may be routed along the coast or over water or both.. depending on the above criteria.

For more information on flight routes in your country, do a search on the net. You might try 'Aviation Australia' or 'airline routes australia' or something similar to this.

From what I have heard, the planes generally fly as close to the coast as possible. If you have to go overseas, they will fly as close to land as possible. This way, if they were to get into an emergency situation they would be closer to somewhere that they could potentially land.
