yes he should. what sort of an example is that anyway??? you lose it, you replace it. even if he did buy it for you, so what!!! it was YOURS!!! and the idea he thinks because he gave it to you as a gift that gives him the right to do what he wants with it, ask him if he ever really gave it to you in the first place or was he just letting you "borrow" it. because that's what it sounds like to me. if he let you "borrow" it, of course he owes you nothing. but if he gave it to you, well it was yours. you deserve the respect anyone else would expect.
you know it's no wonder why so many kids turn to drugs and gangs or other negative outlets. with parents lack of teaching skills. seems they like to "discipline", but there's more to it than that. good luck to you hun.

Yes of course. If you use somebody Else's property even if it is family and you lose it you have to replace it.
