People are praying...
Also, sometimes imams teachs Muslims the orders of Islam. And people learn how to read Koran.
Edit: No, women are allowed to go to mosques! Please, if you do not know Islam, don't tell wrong things!.. When we travel, I always pray in mosques! And all the men there, respects me, and even don't look at me to not disturb me!!!
And as far as I know, mosques generally have a place where the imams informs the people. And, non-Muslims can go there, too! I recently saw one in France, on internet!!! The imam was teaching Islam, also to non-Muslims...

Your average mosque usualy will just be people praying. between prayers you will see people doing extra prayers and reading books, usually the qur'an. People will be helping others memorize chapters of the qur'an. Some people talk and make new friends. Kids will run around all over the mosque playing. Some people sleep until the next prayer comes.
There may be arabic classes for those who want to be able to understand the qur'an. Also classes to learn to recite qur'an verses better and others for chapter commentary and basics of Islam for new Muslims.
Durinng Ramadan they usualy have food to break your fast when the sun goes down, usualy free.
its usualy a very relaxing atmosphere.
I am assuming you are a woman. So if you plan on visting one I would suggest calling the mosque ahead of time so they can have someone show you around, or if you see a woman heading to a mosque you can ask her to help you. Mainly so you dont end up going into the mens section or walk in with your shoes on, everyone takes there shoes off to keep the floor clean. Even if you did go to the mens section they probably wouldnt care as alot of women go there to get there kids or find there husbands.
For men its a bit easier because they dont need to cover there heads. Just take off your shoes and walk into the prayer section and you can watch people pray or talk to people if you have questions.

Prayer...lots and lots of prayer. The same you'd find in a synagogue or a cathedral.
I've always believed that if there are three major religions that converge in the same Holy Place, Jerusalem, we're all idiots to think we have the answers, you know, have it all figured out.
Muslims are kind, gentle people that have been much maligned over the years; as a Christian, I despise that. "We all inhabit this small planet, we all breathe the same air..." JFK said that many years ago and it's too bad we can't really learn from the past, we'd be a lot better off as a country, as a people and...well, as believers.
Sorry about the dissertation-esque response but you got me thinking.

I really dont know.
Women are not allowed in mosques that much I do know. Otherwise they also do not allow non muslims to go in.
Even if they did, I would not want to because then they would
insist in coming into my place of worship. Their rules are good.
I like that.
Do unto others as you would want others to do unto you.
Non muslims should actually not go into mosques. There
are very strict rules about this and if one tries, they would
be breaking the rules of the mosques.

As salaam. Insha'Allah (even if that is the want of Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala /the only God, Glorified and Exalted),non-Muslims are many times welcomed to enter the masjid /mosque see you later as they are respectful and do not interrupt persons as they pray. If non-Muslims were no longer welcomed, we under no circumstances have any reverts to Isalm, inclusive of myself. Alhumdulillah! Please, do no longer be afraid to introduce your self and to describe that you aren't any more a Muslim as maximum man or woman whom you meet on the masjid will gladly translate for you and answer your question in the adventure that they could. Alhumdulillah! (All praise is for Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala). Insha'Allah, there are distinct internet internet sites which will clarify salaah (prayer) alongside with explainations of what's being pronounced inclusive of the surahs ("chapters" of the Holy Qur'an), supplications and du'as (prayers) as well because the right way of positioning one's self for the period of different elements of salah. Masha'Allah (It has extremely joyful Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala), when I went to the masjid for the first time, I very afraid that i'd do something inappropriate or say the incorrect element, etc. in reality, i became welcomed and nicely received and made to sense proper at homestead that's in many circumstances how Muslims manage others. Alhumdualillah! thanks truly on your interest in Islam and would you be righlty guided (as those who're guided by utilizing Allah, Subhanna wa Ta'ala, none can lead off music. Alhumdulillah!) ma'a salaam
