Do you know how many Babi (Bayani) exist nowadays?

The spelling is correct!
Babism: religious movement started in 1844 in Iran, followed by Baha'i. . . .

You are right... Babis did proceed the Baha'i faith. The Bab (meaning the Gate) was supposed to introduce the world to the next prophet, which Baha'is believe to be Baha'u'llah. Here's some info I found on a website.

"The Babi & Baha'i tradition, on the other hand, is probably the most unified of the classical world religions. It is almost entirely contained within one very organized, hierarchical denomination, the Bahai Faith, based in Haifa, Israel. But there are small schismatic groups, such as the Arizona-based "Orthodox"
Baha'is, Azali Babis (probably defunct), and four or five others."

I have heard conflicting information - that there are a few thousand that still exist in Iran and that the religion is now nonexistant. Most of the reliable sources place it around the 1000 mark.

Essentially, a Babi is someone who believed the Bab came and foretold of the new prophet but either reject Baha'u'llah or believes the prophet has not come yet.

I hope this helps!

Best wishes.

I know that a new Bayanis movement began in 2002, but I'm not sure of the connection to the original Persian religious movement. Therefore, I'm not sure how many there are. Probably a very small group, though.
