It's only natural that she hisses but eventually she'll get to know him and used to him being around. I have a 13 yr old cat who still hisses at my 2 yr old cat since a kitten but that's only when he hogs up the plate of food.

Cats aren't herd animals so they don't especially like other cats, especially if your cat has had the house to herself for years and her comes a new little kitty. Hmm little kitty could get a big beating. I would separate them and get some Feliway, get the diffuser and plug it into an outlet in the main room in the house that the older cat is in most often. Then try to introduce them. Also have a spray bottle of water, that way you don't have to risk bodily harm. The Feliway gives off facial pheromones, which make cats feel happy and comfortable.http://www.feliway.uk.com/feliway_uk.nsf/Page?OpenForm
Over time the older cat will get used to the younger one and probably just ignore him.

this is normal. everytime i bring home a rescue kitty my other cats start having hissy fits, so do my whiny kids.(not another cat mom?! yeppers!0 they usually get over it in a few days, kids and cats. your older kitty may smack the little one around a little so it knows it's place a mother cat would do the same. so if you see this dont be overly concerned, but do supervise so the bigger one doesn't get too rough. they will be buddying up to gether in no time. remember you older kitty is a senior citizen and deserves alot of respect and love so dont let everyone be all over the new baby and ignore the older one. she is older and may or may not take longer to warm up to the baby and she may not be as spry as she/he once was so she may be less patient with a new little whirl wind kitten. my males are the ones that usually buddy up sooner with a new cat and the kittens are usually washed and slobbered on by my males before my prissy holier than thou females do. i have a one year old male who totally took over the washing duties of 5 2 week old kittens when i brought them home, the females wanted nothing to do with them. cats, gotta love em'

Gradually let them get to know each other better by having them meet often. Don't yell or scream when they hiss because that will only make the cats associate the other cat with punishment and therefor they STILL won't like eachother. try paying equal attention to both of them and especially when they're around one another make the effort to show that you love both of them the same. Eventually they should become accustomed to one another's company and tolerate it... Maybe even become friends.

I doubt the gender matters, cats are quite territorial, she considered you her human and the house her domain, and now you brought in competition for her space, her affection and so on. Bathe the kitten to help remove some of the scent . be sure the older cat gets lots of attention. and when she hisses simply say calmly, be nice. You are lucky shes not shreading the furniture and peeing in your lunch.

Gradually let them spend more SUPERVISED time together. i had a cat that was 3 and we brought a kitten into the house. it took about a week before we could leave them alone together, but now they get along great!

i had the same problem except it was my older dog growling at my new puppy. keep them seperated. if possible maybe keep one of the cats outside. as the kitten grows, the older cat should tolerate it better. i did this with my dogs and now they get along great.

They should eventually get used to each other. Give the older cat lots of attention. She is jealous.
